When I first saw this video, I knew it would cause a stir. But I decided to wait for the noise to die down before forming an opinion. Personally, I was about 90% sure they weren't bandits based on the setting and a few details I noticed. Part of that confidence comes from my experience working in areas affected by banditry. Years ago, when I started working with an NGO in Katsina, we regularly visited rural communities to conduct peace-building trainings between farmers (mostly Hausa) and herders (mostly Fulani). I still remember one particular day. As we approached a checkpoint, I saw a group of men with dreadlocks, carrying rifles. It was my first time in that environment, and I won't lie, I was scared. Then someone sitting beside me tapped me and said, "No fear, na Civilian JTF." That moment stayed with me because, to an outsider, they looked almost exactly like the people we were being warned about. It immediately raised questions in my mind: How do locals tell the difference? How can someone unfamiliar with the area distinguish one from the other? Over time, from conversations with community members and security personnel, I came to understand that Civilian JTF groups often play a major role in intelligence gathering and local security because they know the terrain and the people far better than anyone else. That's why I wasn't quick to jump to conclusions when I saw the video. Context matters, especially in conflict-affected areas where appearances can be misleading.
