Something interesting I learned about the 1848 Hungarian war for independence. Because the Russian army had no hygiene standards they caused a cholera outbreak when they invaded Hungary in 1849, which killed more people than the war.

Russia definitely does not have the world’s greatest literature. English literature, French literature, and American literature are all stronger and more influential in my view. Russian music is excellent, but it is no match for the combined legacy of German, Austrian, and Italian classical music. The same applies to painting and architecture. Russia has produced remarkable cultural achievements. The claim that it stands unrivalled in every field is simply national mythology.

These countries had western fashion, pop/rock music, etc. for decades before the fall of the wall (unlike NK). There was absolutely no way they could be as isolated as NK.
