Before @Kong, there was Mashape. Few ppl know it was angel-funded in @travisk kitchen in 2010. Negotiating with our to-be investors. He was on my side of the table. We used to go to his bathroom together for five minutes every round of negotiation to give time for them to debate the new offers freely. At some point they wanted to leave to think a better offer. Travis told me if they leave, you won’t ever see them again. He locked the front door to make sure nobody exits the house until we got a handshake deal in front of him. And we did. I had one week left before my visa expired and few bucks left. At the time I was sleeping at the JamPad (Travis house username back then) as a guest. I cold called him from Rome to get a free spot to attend TechCrunch50 after he blogged about giving one free room. I don’t know why he picked us. Random founders from italy. Once in, we stayed longer. My contribution was cooking carbonara pasta for his better half every other night. Every weekend dozens of entrepreneurs would stop by to demo and chat their next big ideas. He showed us his latest gig. An UberCab app. The morning of Techcrunch we had to walk down 20mins to get a cab and nobody would stop. Even tho Travis was in the middle of Market street. One Sunday I met @levie in the bathroom line sharing how he was transforming @Box from consumer to enterprise and for some reasons told Travis to keep helping us. Without Travis help during that time - as immigrant barely speaking english and running out of visa time - we wouldn’t be here today. There is founder mode. And there is military mode. Travis teaches hardcore. We had 3 near-death experiences and two more pivots till the business finally took off with hundreds of millions of revenue. In retrospect, we mentally never gave up during those struggle days because of his early lessons. Now coded into our culture. I don’t think I ever thanked Travis for his fight-gift. Thank you. If someone is born in the arena, will never leave it. The game is just back on.
