Why am I an #isles fan?
(Please bear with me):
Growing up, surrounded by NY Rangers fans in Queens, hockey wasn’t my first favorite sport. It was 4th. The Yankees, Lakers & NY Jets were my three fav teams and loved playing baseball, basketball & football, in that order. I didn’t understand hockey when I was younger however I went to a handful of #isles games growing up & they were my NHL team.
February 4th, 2017, a OT loss to what would be the thorn in mine & every Isles fans hide, the Carolina Hurricanes, changed the trajectory of my life. I went out on a date with a lady to that game & needless to say a couple of weeks later, she ghosted me.
The seed of wanting to watch the Islanders play in person grew. I loved watching the whole game from afar, the constant excitement & moving parts of the game, the LGI, hearing the organ, the drum & doing the ‘Yes! Yes! Yes!’ chant after every goal. Even at Barclays Center, It felt organic. The other thing was the team would get hazed and bullied by other fans bases & media. I felt like I could relate with that because I was bullied & looked over a lot when I was younger. I loved that ‘why not us’ mentality from that group & Isles fans.
Went to three games after during the rest of the 2017 season. I so crazed by the late season isles playoff push that I had my friend change whatever he was watching on TV to put on NYR vs NYI game on NBCSN. Safe to say, I was hooked.
I was more hooked when the Islanders got the 2017-18 schedule out and went to the Isles preseason return to the Nassau Coliseum. A meaningless preseason game felt like a playoff atmosphere that day. Imagine Shea Stadium & Renovated Yankee Stadium back. That’s what going back to the Nassau Coliseum felt like.
Then December 20th, 2017 came. The Isles won the bid for UBS Arena. Every Isles fan was happy about the news. The following night was Ducks Islanders at Barclays Center. I bought tix through @FanaticsArmy, got to meet Bobby Nystrom & Jon Ledecky. The craziest part was before the game, going to the NHL Store to window shop and ran into a fellow isles fan. We instantly hit it off & as soon as we got off the subway at Barclays Center, he told me to buy the cheapest ticket & come sit w/the Blue & Orange Army.
I went to many Isles games during that year, was just about wrapping up my apprenticeship and inquired on getting a season ticket with BOA. The reps were kinda perplexed when I told them I wanted a seat there but I loved it.
Yeah, we all want to see the Islanders win however it’s more than that. I made so many friends over the years just by going to Islanders games. If it wasn’t for Barclays Center, my life would be so much different.
