You guys, I really don’t think urban versus suburban versus rural lifestyles is a productive argument. Different people like different ones. I like urban and suburban, I don’t personally love rural but don’t judge those who do either. Why don’t we just build more everywhere? 1/2

There are some topics that are unavoidably partisan/ideological. I don’t think housing abundance has to be. Socialists see housing is a human right. Conservatives revere property rights. Neoliberals prize growth. There are lots of intellectual roads to housing abundance. 3/3

Earlier today, a colleague at my college (not in my dept.) thanked me for my work on Vermont housing policy. I know her to be well to my left politically. I’ve also been invited to talk to the VT Republican Party about housing policy soon. 1/3

I guess I fear that without expanding stuff like CHT, a faster pace of building won't be able to keep up with wealthy folks moving to avoid fires, floods, and dried up aquifers

@keithchatinover Build so much that it filters down. Minneapolis has good policies on this to give one example. When supply increases more and faster than demand, rents go down. The entire Boston area needs to go up/get denser.

Burlington VT adopted the an Inclusionary Zoning standard like this in 1990. It cratered new housing construction here. In the 5 years before the IZ, we averaged 125 new units a year. In the 5 years after, we averaged 20 new units a year. Please do not repeat our mistakes.

@MonaChalabi yes confusing, lol - what is the deal with the 'mix" axis? i've never seen that before. the text makes it seem like all kids made average incomes, but the axis makes it seem like there were a ton of random incomes that happened to average out in a certain way
