The client’s full SSI benefits were reinstated, the withholding stopped, and the client received approximately $270 in back pay.

Imagine learning out of the blue that you owe money to the government. That’s exactly what happened to a recent LCE client. SSI alleged our client was overpaid by $967 and began withholding $96 per month from their benefits to pay back the overage.

But, the client’s property management failed to cancel the eviction even after the debt was paid. We filed an emergency motion on the morning of the eviction, which the court granted, then called the marshals and stopped the eviction.

The client was losing money because he was not receiving his Social Security, while receiving incorrect and high Medicare bills. We made multiple calls and visits to the Social Security Administration on the client’s behalf so he could receive the benefits he has earned.

Waiting outside on a cold Nov. day many elders & people with disabilities lined up to apply for Emergency Rental Assistance Program benefits – funds needed to avoid homelessness. The Dept. of Human Services knew demand would be high but failed to prevent deplorable conditions.

The client was living in a 2-story home even though she was bedbound, and her safety was increasingly at risk because she could not afford maintenance upkeep. The extra time allowed the client to make thoughtful and empowered decisions about her finances and overall wellbeing.

GOOD NEWS: We helped a 73-year-old homeowner avoid foreclosure and homelessness. We convinced the court and the bank to give the client time to sell her home and move to a safer and more comfortable living arrangement for her health condition.
