Manchester City Women have been crowned winners of the Women's Super League for the first time in a decade — with one game still left to play. After suffering a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea Women on the opening day of the season, City’s title challenge got off to a difficult start. However, they quickly responded in impressive fashion, recording a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion Women, a dominant 5-1 away victory against Tottenham Hotspur Women, and a 4-1 triumph over London City Lionesses in their next three league matches — setting the tone for the rest of the campaign. Winger Lauren Hemp highlighted the mentality within the squad earlier in the season, saying: “It’s important that we use the fire and hunger within us and go on and win league titles.” That determination has been a major driving force behind this City side throughout the campaign. Manchester City Head Coach Andrée Jeglertz said earlier in the season that “his main task is to create the winning mentality and believe that we can win,” and since that opening-day defeat, Manchester City have gone on to win 17 of their 20 league games, showing the sheer determination behind his statement. With Chelsea dropping crucial points throughout the season, the closest challenge came from Arsenal Women, who still had two games in hand and hopes of taking the title race to the final day. But a 1-1 draw away at Brighton ended those hopes, allowing City to move 8 points clear of Chelsea and 10 points clear of the Gunners, securing the title with games to spare. Captain of the Blues Alex Greenwood once said: “I would love nothing more than to be the captain who lifts a trophy at this football club.” Now in her sixth season as a Blue, that dream has become a reality for the right-back. Manchester City can now turn their attention to their game against Chelsea this weekend in the Women's FA Cup semi-final and their final game of the season away to West Ham United Women. Congratulations to Manchester City on a formidable season! 🎨 @LDAWGraphics #Beyondthepitch #womensfootball #manchestercity #barclayswsl
