As a foreigner, I find it difficult to grasp how popular the LPL really is in China, so I did my own little fun experiment during my trip in China of wearing LPL jerseys and see if they would be recognized. The result was very fun, many Chinese people would regularly point towards my jerseys. Some would even ask for pictures. The IG fan from the picture on the right was shocked when he saw me in Chongqing, probably wondering why some random white dude was wearing a jersey from his favorite team. He told me me that no matter how much they lose, he is always cheering for IG. Overall Esports and League Of Legends felt popular in China, I regularly saw spaces or merch dedicated to either, especially in big cities. Esports probably feels more present in South-Korea and France, but China is up there. However, given how big the country is, it doesn't surprise me that they're probably the most lucrative market for Riot Games. I'm aware this is very anecdotal, but I had a lot of fun meeting LPL fans. However I hope we can get reliable numbers about Chinese viewership someday in order to have a real comparison

The arena in Berlin doesn't just benefit the 200 in-person fans: - It showcases a professional product to newer viewers and to potential sponsors - It improves the product with crowd reactions, player walkouts (yes rare in lol), in-person interviews - Enables in-person sponsorship activations - Tests players on-stage (this has been an issue for several players in the past, and is needed practice for internationals) - Player reactions from different angles Personally, I would understand if the LEC moves online, it'd save a lost of costs to Riot. Berlin is also not the ideal city to host an arena. But let's not pretend it is useless for the product, if Riot keep the arena, it's good news for the esport and does not prevent roadshows. LEC being played online would feel like a massive setback and a terrible message for external parties.

@targetdecker Agreed, I've heard vague estimations of one full production day being around 70k I would be surprised if you can't get most of this value back from sponsorships activations + how much value it brings to the product as a whole

@LEC_Wooloo Only Riot knows the exact numbers, but I can’t see how the money saved from switching to online play outweighs the devaluation of the entire product for sponsors and fans alike.

for Berlin; It's an expensive place and far from countries with huge esports fandom For the gap with the East; That's a decade-long discussion and it would be pretentious of me to have the perfect answer, but it's something very worrying for the LEC long-term. The answer is most likely that we can't fix the gap overnight and need to think long term by investing in our development system of young players and have joint effort from everybody in the scene to push the region to a higher level

@LEC_Wooloo Why is Berlin a bad place for hosting the league? My second question how can we improve the league to finally close that immense gap that widened over the last 5 years? I can't watch the west losing every international in the type of fashion we did now. It doesn't get better.

@LEC_Wooloo Le seul problème actuel c'est Berlin parce qu'il faut pas croire qu'en online ca sera plus clean, y'aura moins de bug, plus pratique ou jsp quoi. Comme tu le dis le studio offline permet une qualité de divertissement impossible en online et gamebreaker pour l'image et les sponsor
