This bittersweet scene is of Fireman James Roots receiving a Silver Gallantry Medal in 1936 for ‘extraordinary bravery’. Roots had attended a massive fire at a Milliners shop & tried to bravely rescue four people. Sadly they died & he was injured & hospitalised #FireFactsFriday

Thanks @PaintingsLondon for sharing this impactful painting in our collection. Both the subject Gillian 'Bobbie' Tanner & the artist Mary Pitcairn were Auxiliary Firewomen. They had bravely volunteered to join the Auxiliary Fire Service in #WWII to protect London & Londoners.

@river_rowing @RBFRSofficial @LondonFire What a wonderful image @river_rowing, so much going on! That looks like a horse-drawn steam fire engine. They were invented in 1829 & gained popularity from the 1860s. So it's possible that it could have been taken a bit earlier. @LondonFire started to phase them out during #WW1

Looks fantastic @bexhillmuseum and great in the exhibition space too! Nice opportunity for us to share our steam fire engine! It was manufactured by Shand Mason in around 1890, and used by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, which became @LondonFire Brigade in 1904! 🚒
