Happy Fibonacci Day, 6/18. I have a story to share. When my daughter was in high school, I offered to her teacher that I come teach a class on Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio. He agreed to have me come, but only after the standardized tests were done for the year. I went through the standard things you might expect, about how the Fibonacci series goes, where it is found in nature and in the works of man, e.g. in the design of a guitar, the aspect ratio of a credit card, etc. I even showed them Fib retracements in some stock charts, which got them more interested than I expected. Then I gave them a math exercise, asking them to pick 5 boys and 5 girls to do some measurements. I had them take off their shoes, and measure floor to head height, and floor to belly button, and find the ratios. Then they averaged those ratios together for the boys and for the girls. As I expected, the average ratio for the boys was right at 0.618, but not for the girls. So then I told them to mathematically give the girls 3-inch heels, raising the distance of both measurements, and recalculate. Voila, the average of the girls' ratios with pseudo 3" heels was 0.618 as well. I summed up by saying, "And now you know why women wear heels."
