Check it out! 👇 Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working in short, intense bursts to record a cover—or perhaps more accurately, an interpolation—of John Foxx’s (@foxxmetamedia) iconic synth masterpiece "Underpass." Now it’s done…and I’m posting the full track here for free! Listen with headphones at maximum volume. I’ve long been a massive admirer of John’s work. From the pioneering post-punk art rock of Ultravox! to his visual art, his aesthetic has always occupied a specific, crystalline space in my mind. This track is my humble homage to that legacy; it’s an attempt to inhabit his world while still letting my own personality bleed through the circuitry. My goal was to preserve the stark, clinical electronics that make the original song so haunting, but I didn't want to stop at a mere carbon copy. I felt a pull to expand the sonic architecture—to build upward and outward on the foundations Foxx laid down in 1980. There is a more personal reason for this project, too. The main synth riff of "Underpass" is so iconic and pervasive that it has become a permanent resident in my subconscious. I’ve realized over the years that I frequently "rip it off" in my own demos without even realizing it. Consider this recording a creative purge. By tackling the song head-on, I’m hoping to finally get that melody out of my system and give it the proper tribute it deserves, rather than letting it continue to haunt my original demos. The accompanying artwork is my attempt to capture the unique blend of Ballardian urban decay and surrealism of the original single and accompanying album, METAMATIC.
