A single person with a disability and no earnings takes home $14,411 in 2024 A single person without a disability earning $30k takes home $25,920 Separate, they take home $14,411 + $25,920 = $40,331 If they marry, they take home $31,862 $8,469 marriage penalty, or 21%

Many politicians believe that when someone with a disability is married, it's the job of the spouse to pay for their disabled spouse's survival and thus PwD lose their SSI checks as a result of marriage and thus often "choose" to remain unmarried. Basic income would change this.

@Dewdropfairy2 We need someone with the financial ability to bring cases before the court. Groups/organizations and/or legal teams who are willing to do so.

Actually, it is illegal for the CDC to tell you to “return to normal activities” while infected with a deadly communicable disease. Very illegal.

@Billius27 This move is yet another hurdle for those of us who need to work remotely due to underlying medical conditions, but whose employers will not accommodate them. The CDC’s response to thousands of us caught between choosing either our livelihood or our lives is to make it worse!

@CupcakeJones8 @outbreakupdates In many places, there already aren't. We're already facing a huge demand for aging care in the coming years and a serious lack of trained medical staff to care for them just due to demographics. Add the post-Covid effects, and we're truly doomed.

@1goodtern Agree. We don't measure because it would inconvenience people to behave differently - period. I live by the weather as I can only see people for meals outside due to immune issues. Most of my events are cancelled and I'm now isolated.

Imagine learning to live with weather by cancelling all the weather forecasts and getting rid of waterproofs and umbrellas and sunscreen and cool drinks and heating.

@CovidintheChart This makes me want to cry. We stopped publicly testing and measuring COVID infections so now everyone thinks it is gone. It hit my mother's assisted living facility and they didn't require masks or inform those who had dined (by requirement) with the infected. She is positive.

@polybioRF Glad to see so many studies of different elements of post-COVID impacts. I don't see any that address autonomic respiratory effects of Long COVID (i.e., no impulse to breathe, high CO2, low O2 during sleep study w/bipap). Anyone aware of any?

@hollaatmeMD @JBsTwoCents I somehow doubt that the couples affected by the mistaken destruction of their embryos would have liked a total elimination of the very process they themselves needed to be the outcome of their case. Let's hear what they have to say.

Here’s what I haven’t really seen in the wake of the Alabama ruling. From those who agree with the reasoning, I haven’t seen an immediate, responsive desire to adopt what will inevitably be an overwhelming number of embryos that have chromosomal abnormalities. Because now in Alabama, embryos that would carry terminal genetic conditions, like Mia’s, that guarantee miscarriage, significant pain and suffering, or global developmental delays, will remain viable for implantation. And if you truly believe, as supporters of this ruling say they do, that these embryos are already children, how is there not an overwhelming demand to care for the least of these, to adopt and implant and carry each embryo? Who among these supporters will knowingly choose to take on this mantle of birthing and caring for a medically fragile child, to modify their homes and lives, to quit their jobs so they can travel to therapies and specialist appointments, learn how to vent feeding tubes and clean CPAP machines, and risk bankruptcy and max out their insurance plans to ensure that these children have the lives they are entitled to? Because that is the immediate implication of this ruling.

@JulieKashen This sounds so much like my conversation with my then 6 year old trying to explain about Rosa Parks (following a visit to the exhibit in the Library of Congress) and segregation... "What do you mean my friend XXX wouldn't have been allowed to go to school with me?"

A great new report from CAP: "Lower earnings during one’s working years translate into lower Social Security benefits, less ability to save for retirement, and, ultimately, higher risks of poverty and material hardships in old age." americanprogress.org/article/promot…

Update Spain: Masks are required in health facilities everywhere in Spain to "protect patients and professionals" Masking is "an effective, common sense rule that is supported by scientific evidence and well-received by the general public."
Michael Knigge@kniggem

@oldfshndanne People doing the right thing shouldn't be punished. The schools can say what they want - they can provide him with work he can do from home when he feels better. But if he goes in and infects other kids and families and STAFF, that eliminates school for all.

@dysclinic @reshmakapadia I was infected in July 2022. At first I didn’t think it was bad. But after about a week (and being on Paxlovid), I would wake gasping for air. It was as if every time I fell asleep, my body forgot to breathe. I am on a bipap now with low O2 and high CO2 in sleep.Any hope for me?

I've been seeing terrible health problems post-Covid, and I've been seeing patients with #LongCovid who are improving. While talking to both patient populations, I warn them that another Covid infection can make them worse... and I am terrified at the lack of pandemic control measures and non-existent public health strategies to mitigate the spread of #SARSCoV2! People are pretending that everything is fine, engaging in "ignorance is a bliss" mentality, but...NOBODY IS IMMUNE. If you got lucky the first time, you may not be as lucky after the second infection. Sadly, nobody but a few people are masking, and many parts of the country are no longer offering free PCR testing. #LongCovid and post-Covid conditions are major public health issues that are being minimized, dismissed or ignored. Many young and middle-aged people have been disabled and will be disabled after a mild Covid infection while we have very little to offer for treatment. We are in an ongoing, disabling #pandemic with high morbidity rates. #CovidIsntOver #MaskUP #PatientCare #LongCovidIsDisabling #MedTwitter

I felt so relieved today. The director of my daughter’s school was at the gate asking every family is they tested today before coming. Anyone who didn’t was sent to the office to test. I feel so lucky.

Meanwhile, the gap between corporate profits and the taxes they pay is widening. We have a corporate tax expenditure problem. A commission will not solve that—it will cut Social Security benefits and use the money to lower taxes for corporations, again./4 cbo.gov/publication/58…

Over HALF of the very same Committee members sent a letter to the Speaker asking for an extension of certain business tax cuts from the 2017 TCJA before the year's end, which adds to the very deficit they bemoan. 3/ d12t4t5x3vyizu.cloudfront.net/yakym.house.go…

Why can't I take deficit commission talk seriously? A fiscal commission has never been about the deficit, it's about paying for tax cuts on the backs of benefit cuts for vulnerable Americans. For evidence of how disingenuous the Republicans are on this issue, keep reading. /1
