@Jobaker9 In the same vein, planning my classroom for September so all good. Be a nice change from being a nomad in my training and NQT years.

With greatest sadness we have to announce the death of our dear colleague and friend, Richard Deswarte. Richard was an inspirational scholar and teacher, a compassionate and kind man who always made time for his students and colleagues. We are heartbroken. RIP @CanadianRichard

@UEA_History @CanadianRichard Devastated to hear the news of Richard’s passing. He was a truly amazing historian, teacher, and advisor. Incredibly supportive and encouraging, and someone you could rely on. I have no doubt whatsoever that he will be remembered fondly by all who had the pleasure of his company.

This was an incredible experience for our pupils! So so pleased that my Y10s got to hear such a thought provoking story. @DinoDocMike you were brilliant, the pupils were hanging on your every word. The importance of humanising victims of the Holocaust cannot be understated.

Our History dept were privileged to welcome Dr Mike Keen to discuss the experience of his mother, surviving the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Belgium with our Year 10 GCSE pupils. A fascinating story of a courageous young woman not much older than our pupils! @LHewerdine

@OakmoorHums @UCL_Holocaust Are you happy to share these booklets at all please? I’ve been rethinking the topic recently and curious how other schools tackle the subject.

@antonylittle The comments on the original post about Ethiopia never being colonised also suggest a pre-1939 amnesia for some too!

@allflattmfl @26mxw I agree that debate is good. No question. Although, I wonder if there are better ways to teach about the Holocaust that don’t require as much context to get the initial message right, and understand what could be argued to be the nuance of the writing, to then debate it well.

Idle question: is there any book or work of literature that you think all children should read before they leave secondary education?

@allflattmfl @26mxw I’m torn on this. The last time I read it I thought it was a brilliant way of getting younger readers to think about the Holocaust. Since though, I’ve seen some academics questioning whether it actually fails to humanise the victims, so teaches the wrong message. I must reread.

@missjoneshist Think more in terms of making the content of the lesson interesting, then make the activities high leverage. Make it worth their while. If you do quizzing, they’ll be rewarded with higher scores. Obviously high leverage activities can be fun, but don’t pursue fun primarily.

Really enjoyed @UCL_Holocaust CPD this afternoon looking at common mistakes in textbooks teaching the Holocaust. So much food for thought in a 45 minute session! Really recommended. Can’t wait to use the new UCL textbook in the classroom next term.

So far in 1066: • Edward the Confessor has died. • Harold Godwineson has been named king instead of Edgar Ætheling. • Edward has been buried. • Harold has been crowned. It's still only 6 January.
