@brian_armstrong oh, god. we all know you are a bad actor. better stay away and go spend your time fixing ETH - they also use ECC. Vitalik needs your personal help.

Going to start spending time on this personally - seems like we all need to solve it sooner rather than later.

The latest quantum papers from Google and Caltech are an important signal for the industry. Timelines are still debated, but the time to act is now. The good news: post-quantum cryptography exists. This is a solvable problem, and many chains already have roadmaps. Bitcoin needs to catch up though. The bad news: post-quantum cryptography is relatively new and it would be fairly easy to create new security risks if implementation is rushed. The industry needs to align on what happens to wallets that fail to migrate before a CRQC appears. At Coinbase, we’ve been working on this for a while, auditing and upgrading our internal infrastructure, researching post-quantum cryptography and establishing a Quantum Advisory Council. It’s clear Bitcoin needs to make some fast progress here, so Coinbase is taking the role of rallying the troops and getting the right people in the room - Bitcoin core devs and the broader community - so they can start tackling this. But no one developer or company can do this alone. Real progress will require coordinated action across the ecosystem. If you’re working on post-quantum approaches for Bitcoin, we want to support you, and connect you with others that are working on it too. Please DM me directly and I’ll get you added to the working group. Bitcoin can and will upgrade, but it will take the entire community working together.

@lopp Care to elaborate how? All the people who care and want to self custody already do. Imho, unless there is a new 6102-like event, with the mass adoption (banks, etc.) the state of things is only going to deteriorate.

Instead of forking Core for a quadrillionth time, you could contribute to Bitcoin Kernel which separates consensus from the client, thus helping you make a from-scratch client that is consensus compatible and without having to fork Core once again.

@Anton__BTC HDDs work just fine. I know because my full node has one. What does not work is SBC such RPI with SSD/HDD attached via USB, or god forbid, with an SD card. So instead of bitching go to ebay.com and by youself SFF workstation with ECC RAM and read SATA controller.

A coretard below admitting between the lines, that ever increasing spam forces nodes to use ever more expensive hardware to finish IBD in acceptable time: - first nodes had to move from cheap 6 Gbps SATA HDD to 6 Gbps SATA SSD, - now a coretard mocks a pleb saying node is a server and direct PCIe SSD should be used instead of one bridged over 10 Gbps USB 3.2. So coretards, when RAID setups over PCIe 5.0?

@stephanlivera also worth noting that one, generally speaking, don't need an SSD for a bitcoin full node, a 40 dollar/euro refurbished HDD would work just fine for the next 10 years.

Knotzis overplay spam bloat making nodes unaffordable. Full archival Bitcoin node ≈ 830 GB today. Even in this temporary AI-driven spike, a 2TB SSD costs $280–$350. Tech follows a long-term power-law deflation. SSD costs have fallen dramatically for decades. By 2035, that 2TB drive will likely cost $25–$40. Storage cheapens faster than the chain grows.
