Random request: I've mentioned my son is obsessed with sprinkles on bread since we visited Lisse. I would love to write an article on hagelslag for my American audience (especially after seeing this recipe! 🤣). If you have pictures (or thoughts) I could use, I would love them!

@CeliaBedelia So your ideal place to live would be warm, has plenty of gluten-free options, doesn't get tornadoes or landslides like SC, and is close to Christmas markets. Berlin is three of those, with the occasional summer heatwave.

@LIDutchess Sometimes, I think my body really wants me to move back to where I grew up. All of my health problems began once I left South Carolina. 🫠 My body had never known coldness or darkness before I moved to Utah for college!

I had bloodwork done this week & my vitamin D is at 8, which is apparently very low. I already take supplements but need to go up to 20,000 IU/day. I take cod liver oil & drink milk/orange juice. Any other tried-and-true fixes? Mallorca? Or do I just give in to being a vampire?

@CeliaBedelia I always bring hagelslag back to the US after visiting home. I can't go there till the end of this year, but I can order hagelslag and other goodies online from two Dutch stores in Michigan 😃

I tried explaining to some of our American friends and family members about the sheer magnitude of fireworks being launched throughout the city of Berlin on New Year’s Eve. It is incomprehensible. When we moved here, a fellow American warned me, “Think of the biggest Fourth of July celebration you’ve ever been to and then multiply that by 10 and imagine it lasting 5 hours.” And even that doesn’t begin to describe what New Year’s Eve is like here. 90% of Germany’s fireworks are sold in 3 days, every street becomes a launchpad, and anyone can be a pyrotechnician. 🎆 Here’s our view from last year. And it went on and on for hours.

@CeliaBedelia It's similar in the Netherlands, although not as extreme as Berlin. My whole life I celebrated NYE with fireworks, so seeing nothing here came as a shock. We're off to NYC now to enjoy fireworks in Central Park! On the 4th of July I go outside just for the smell of fireworks 😄

@CeliaBedelia When I moved to the US I had boxes shipped by boat, arranged through a local moving company. You pay for the amount of space you use on the container. Still not very cheap and it takes quite a long time, but it was more affordable than by air.

My husband is in the US cleaning out our storage unit. We would like to ship our books to Berlin, but it looks as though media mail isn’t an international thing (from what I can see online). Any recommendations from people who have mailed boxes of books from the US to Germany?

@potatoslav For me and my friends in the early 90s (10-12 YO and limited English skills), it was the ultimate slow dance song. It sounded so romantic!

@potatoslav Schools on Long Island closed (early) some days in June because of extreme heat and, surprise surprise, they have no AC! Apparently a lot of schools here don't have it or only in a few rooms and it's too expensive to install it in the entire buildings.

it is so hot in my German city (90F/32C) that they need to close the schools. you know what could fix that?

i was born in 1990 the perfect millennial year and the people older than me are always claiming gen x and younger claiming gen z. the true millennial identifier is apparently insisting that you aren’t one.

@Larisvd Echt verschrikkelijk. Ongeveer het hele process staat uitgeschreven, inclusief onnodige weetjes en reclame, terwijl het ook gewoon stap voor stap in het recept staat. Helaas hebben bijna al dit soort websites dezelfde opzet.

Niks stoort mij harder dan een recept opzoeken en dat ik eerst ellendig lang moet scrollen door de historie achter het recept en hoe elk ingrediënt gemaakt is voor ik daadwerkelijk zie wat ik op m’n boodschappenlijst moet zetten en hoe het te maken. Gast, doe ff normaal man.
