Something I don’t think people fully realize is one of the reasons dc escaped the worst of the superstars city housing crises was that going from a high crime city to a modest left huge parts of underdeveloped industrial or even abandoned land, that was easy to build on because it wasn’t in someone’s neighborhood, having like Oakland for example have falling crime & disorder would unlock tons of developable land that wouldn’t have quite the same nimby opposition as real infill.

I support this, but I think people living in the Bay Area have developed fantastical views about the downstream political impacts of lower crime. It would be good to have less petty theft just because it's worth doing on its own terms.

Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser cut the ribbon on Cycle House, an 18-unit, all-affordable housing community in Ward 5’s Truxton Circle. This project shows our commitment to sustainable and affordable housing. As Mayor Bowser said, it wasn’t easy, but we saw it to the finish line.
