@Observe_It68 @digitalfoundry It's hardly an assumption if it's pretty fucking obvious. If your car has a warning light, do you assume something might be wrong? Or do you wait until something catastrophically breaks to do anything about it?

@Observe_It68 @digitalfoundry So I shouldn't assume the very same thing already happening in so many industries, including roles in game dev already relevant to AI, will continue to happen? If management at some AAA studio thinks they can hire less artists because of this, you don't think that'll happen?

DLSS 5 represents the first big, literally game-changing example of neural rendering in gaming, posing an array of questions the games industry will need to find answers for: digitalfoundry.net/news/2026/03/d…

@Observe_It68 @digitalfoundry You can turn off frame gen too. But Nvidia will sure as hell overcharge for underpowered hardware under the guise of a 2-4x fps improvement. That can be overcome with time, but what happens when this is used to cut corners on a games visuals? The game would be forever worse off.

@digitalfoundry It looks great and I think people should be happy about it. Don’t turn it on if you don’t want to use it. But the fact is that this is the future and even PlayStation is doing their own version of it .. It’s the future 🤷🏻‍♂️

@ribeirosoo @LForeverblue @digitalfoundry And you expect news outlets to be uncritical because... DF doesn't have to hate it, but it's a hit to their credibility that they keep glossing over pretty significant issues with the core technology. Critical analysis is why they're there

This is difficult I think it looks ass to be clear, but to await audience reaction would've changed everything (not for the good) I think it's fair to be curious and even a little impressed/shocked. First impressions are not static, DF show new stuff. This is new stuff

@BlackPanthaaYT Their audience is also built from people who care about art in games. It's a technical channel but people watch it because they're interested in game art. I don't think their communities response is surprising and tbf I do agree with it, minus the assholes hurling abuse ofc

@BlackPanthaaYT DF isn't Nvidia PR. Their job isn't to show off new stuff, the official announcements do that, but to analyze new stuff. They should have given themselves enough time to release a thorough analysis of the good and the bad, but not waited until a reaction to avoid controversy 🤷‍♂️

@joeschwarten @HardwareUnboxed @St3v3_1 Soooo, what you're saying is, if everyone was old, wrinkly, and unshaven, we could be living in an AI utopia? Typical 🙄😆 Ngl tho, the old lady from hogwarts didn't look like a different person, but imo was probably the worst of the lot in the 'AI sheen' department

@LJITimate @HardwareUnboxed @St3v3_1 Leon & the one older lady looked at least like themselves. While Grace & the boy from Hogwarts seemed to drastically look different as they had less detailed faces. Also maybe why environments didn't really change except some added lighting. What you're saying seems to work.

"The AI model powering DLSS 5 is a single unified model. Same model for every game. It's not trained per-title, per-face, or per-object type." Why are Nvidia claiming developers have full control over the artistic intent of DLSS 5 output when it uses a unified model that isn't trained per game? Surely this would mean DLSS 5 output would converge to the same type of visuals across games, removing artistic intent/touch. Just as we see from current gen AI tools Giving developers true, full artistic control would surely mean having specific models for each game trained only on that studio's assets?

@joeschwarten @HardwareUnboxed @St3v3_1 Ofc denoising white noise over a blank surface would be more prone to making up patterns outa nowhere than white noise over preexisting details that are more obvious than the noise itself. This is all assuming both my memory is correct and things haven't changed so I'm not sure

@joeschwarten @HardwareUnboxed @St3v3_1 Can't say I've noticed, but it's possible. As I understand it, image gen is just a denoiser 'good' enough to hallucinate stuff from white noise. So img to img works by mixing in X% of noise and then denoising new detail? If that's still how it works here, it might explain it.

@HardwareUnboxed @St3v3_1 I doubt it's changing the strength of the output after it's already generated. I suspect it's like a gen AI img to img model where you control the strength of the input. The output is 100% AI, but limited in how much it can deviate from the input

From the thread "Developers don't just get an on/off switch. They get intensity controls that can be dialed anywhere, not just full strength. They get spatial masking, so they can set the water enhancement to 100%, wood to 30%, characters to 120%, all independently within the same scene. They get color grading controls for blending, contrast, saturation, and gamma." That makes it sound like the developers get whatever output DLSS 5 creates, then they can choose how to apply that output. Eg changing intensity or grading. Which is very different to having the ability to change what the model produces

@GamersNexus Id love to know what's behind the camera in these shots. I garantee the new lighting and extra highlights have nothing to do with the environment This ain't ray reconstruction. This is just generative AI dragging the artists intent towards its training data kicking and screaming

The problem, and I know this is hard to follow, is that it... looks like shit If you smeared dog shit on a camera lens, lit someone's face up with about $8,000 of studio-grade 5500K lighting, and then added some lipstick, you get DLSS5. It looks like shit. It's that simple.
Jay Dook@JayDook

If DLSS 5 is ‘AI slop,’ but current in-market DLSS, FSR, frame gen, PSSR, etc. are fine, then your problem clearly isn’t AI. So what is it? Defend your position without virtue signaling. Replies are open.

@GamersNexus I reckon it's like img to img gen AI. Sure, they could add less noise/denoising for a more faithful result, but then the AI wouldn't make any 'improvements' either. You can't fully control what it'll actually do, and I don't think it's fed any lighting data (just texture buffers)

@ZephyrionVortex @htowen97 @TheAndyCortez @digitalfoundry @NVIDIAGeForce This is a hogwarts student. He looks like a teacher. It may be keeping the composition of the image but the more it's leveraged to 'improve' the lighting (I would bet) the more it will deviate from the original color, texture, materials, and the lighting it's intended for.

@LJITimate @htowen97 @TheAndyCortez @digitalfoundry @NVIDIAGeForce Yes,Grace model looks like a different person, but the other examples look faithful to their originals. This isn't new, view the character models in UC4 or TLOU2 in the model viewer and compare them to in game, they look significantly different depending on lighting conditions.

It's funny seeing all these people trying to "protect the artist vision" when speaking about DLSS5, but they're perfectly fine with putting CJ from San Andreas or Thomas the Tank Engine in every game they play.

Are we supposed to actually believe DLSS 5 gives developers control to maintain a game's "unique aesthetic" when the examples they show completely change the artistic style of some characters? "Ah yes, this completely different looking person is what I wanted all along!"
Hardware Canucks@hardwarecanucks

Context is important too. It puts additional levers into the artists' hands. Whether or not those tools get abused is another matter altogether since evidently this runs the risk of AI Slop being pushed even more broadly into games.
