The Kid called me today while I was at work. “Dad I got called up to Varsity….I’ll play 2nd base or Outfield….” - Here’s how it went down…The Varsity Head Coach went to the JV field. “Where’s Vela…grab your stuff come to the Varsity field” -Vinny said my legs were shaking when I was taking ground balls at 2nd base! @CoachBeede This is not true,. One,..there’s hardly any coaches at tournaments anymore,… Two they’re going to take the kid with the most explosive exit velocity over the kid that gets on base and actually knows how to play. It’s unfortunate, but that’s what it has become.

A college coach at a tournament this weekend will fill three pages of notes on roughly 200 student-athletes. By Monday morning, most of those notes will be discarded. The ones that survive are not the ones with the loudest stat lines. They are the ones with a specific moment attached. "Picked up his teammate after the error in the 5th." "Asked the umpire a respectful question after the check-swing call." "First one out of the dugout for every pitching change." Your son does not control which coach is watching. He controls which moments are worth writing down.

@CoachBeede The scouting game has changed!! Thx for sharing!! It’s about character and dealing with failure. The talent is there…the real scouts look at everything outside of the…3 for 3…body language and how they interact in the dugout and after a bad AB. The little things

Why is someone who throws 85-87 playing summer ball? Probably because outside of 3 conferences of D1 baseball your odds as a player of being selected are less than .001% and the guys are enjoying the last bit of the kids game they have left before life takes over.

If you want to "raise a D1 athlete" here's what works: 1. Stop trying to raise a D1 athlete Support your kid. Let them play whatever they want to play. Drive them to practice But it's got to come from them. They've got to want it. You can't force it. 2. Have great genetics

College athletics is so crazy now. Cal baseball, a team located on the Pacific coast but somehow in the ACC, flew to Charlotte, North Carolina for a single-elimination conference tournament game against Stanford… a school 90 minutes from their campus. They traveled 2,715 miles across the country to play a regional rival, lost one game, then had to hop on a 5.5-hour flight back to California 😂
