Yes, I’ve read Butturini’s essay, and it is extremely disturbing. I’m also aware that left-wing artists can be deeply reactionary and at times openly racist; I’ve worked in art schools. Ginsberg promoted pedophilia. @duckrabbitblog @LTHdebate @chiragwakaskar #PhotoEthics

@PaulTHalliday @ParomaMukherjee @LTHdebate Have you read the preface written by Butturini, in which he describes his reasons for exactly *this* photo juxtaposition? And you are also aware of his longstanding leftist activism? And that the book included poems by civil-rights icon Allen Ginsberg? gianbutturini.com

This is what structural racism in photography looks like. The facts are not disputed. Parr has apologized. And yet this. What a shitshow.

Hey @Multistory. In May 2019 you agreed there was no place for photogs who perpetuate racism at your festival. You were unequivocal in your response.

A further extraordinary exchange between @parrstudio and @LTHdebate. Please note the word 'racism' is missing from his public apology. He calls the images 'offensive and demeaning'. Here, privately, to a Black woman, they are a 'racist juxtaposition'.

Update: I’m glad Martin Parr is taking the necessary steps recommended. However, we must continue to hold people in positions of power accountable for their roles in perpetuating racism and misogyny.

Imagine a #photography festival that provided a platform for, + championed, overlooked + under-represented black photographers. What would it look like?

Talking to The Art Newspaper, Baptiste Halliday says Parr is “the Charleston statue of photography”. “He represents a generation of white, middle-aged men who do what they want without any consequences. He is the institution, and we are only beginning to dismantle it.”

EXCLUSIVE - Martin Parr apologises unreservedly, steps down as Artistic Director of @BRSphotofest after anti-racist student campaign by @LTHdebate My report at @TheArtNewspaper theartnewspaper.com/news/martin-pa…

Maybe it's time to ask the people who have been traditionally excluded from decision making at photo festivals and the photogs who have experienced racism, what a BlackLivesMatter reflecting photo festival should look like?

Now that Martin Parr has gone from @BRSphotofest can we talk about why @LuaRibeira, a photog who made money shooting a Black women with a chain around her neck, eyes rolled back, is still featured?

The issue of Parr editing an overtly racist book, platforming child abuse, along with the abuse of sex workers, has been publicly challenged for over a year. It is a disgrace than an employee of Autograph supports this award. #BlackPhotographers #PhotoEthics @LTHdebate
duckrabbit@duckrabbitblog

@robjohnsinfo @shotbyshaun @Bindi_Vora I'm presuming she doesn't know Parr had his photo removed from the anti-racism photography fundraiser last week because of his assistant's behaviour towards a young black woman protesting the racist book he had republished?
