@theHumanBorch Congrats! beautiful work and lots of inspiration. I am also jealous of that orca-shaped UMAP in Fig1! My 4-yo would be so proud of me if I brought that back from work ^^

@ChelseaParlett when are they ever going to incorporate the "did you mean..?" warning? They already sort of do it with = instead of ==

At this point, if dplyr can’t understand what I mean by |> muate() that feels like a skill issue on dplyr’s end💅

You know how grants have very precise deadlines, like Feb 28th by 5pm Eastern? Imagine, just imagine if those agencies imposed the same rigour to themselves, instead of saying "results will be out in the month of July".

USB ports are to computers what pockets are to women's clothes. Why can't we have them? No, I don't want to buy an expensive adapter so that I can stick a USB drive in my laptop. I've spent that money to buy a purse to carry all the things that I can't fit in my pocketless outfit

Tried #ChatGPT for coding in spite of me (I lazily asked for suggestion on our lab chat and a student fwd me a chatGPT response). Mesmerized at the straight face with which it just made up a non-existing function.

@science_dot @maw_tweets If only they would pay at least some decent proof reading and formatting! There is literally only cash flowing into these journals, no cash flowing out. Amazing business model.

Nature now charges $12,290 US to publish a single article open access. Shall we list some things that cost less than that? I'll go first: a 2017 BMW 330i sedan, a 7-day cruise for a family of four, six Louis Vuitton purses. 🤪

@NinaSteele17 @Momademia Mine was born in April 2020 and we really only had two bad winters, 2020/21 and 2021/2022. She must have missed 3-4 days of school since summer 2022! But we live in France where people have a platinum-iridium microbiome..

There has actually not been a single week in which myself or my toddler has not been ill since she started daycare in December. I’m exhausted by this, and talking to parents of older kids it honestly doesn’t seem that much better?! @Momademia

Tell me about your worst work mistakes. Sometimes I comfort myself with not being the person who got a ship stuck in the Suez Canal but that's not working today.

@eofallthings Accidentally turned off the freezer counter at an ice cream parlor where I was working when I was 20. All the ice creams melted (this was in Italy where ice cream is a year-round basic human right).

@angie_rasmussen @mbeisen @eLife More editorial discretion, or I should say, less editorial washing their hands clean of any responsibilities, like they do in traditional journals, sounds like a dreamboat to this author.

This is just completely false. Either @angie_rasmussen doesn’t understand the new @eLife model she is mocking, or she’s lying about what happened. At no point did I “accept” the paper - as there is no acceptance in the new model. I sent it out for public review.
Dr. Angela Rasmussen@angie_rasmussen

From the exchange above, we see that Michael Eisen, the then-EIC of eLife, championed this paper and accepted it over the objections of subject matter experts just because he decided he thought it should. Except that went…poorly. eLife ended up rejecting the paper after all.

@mbeisen @AllofUsResearch @Nature The tenet of racism is that biology justifies supremacy of white people. Surely we can deny this hierarchy without denying human diversity (that any PCA plot will also show, although more meaningfully)? Feminism doesn't require denying biological differences between genders.

@lpachter Guilty of using UMAPs in cancer papers (even if I dislike them), but most people don't discuss distance between clusters at all in the actual paper. It's mostly a colourful intro to some more solid data exploration. Can anyone cite an example of a point made about a UMAP alone?
