From the exchange above, we see that Michael Eisen, the then-EIC of eLife, championed this paper and accepted it over the objections of subject matter experts just because he decided he thought it should. Except that went…poorly. eLife ended up rejecting the paper after all.




For the record, I'm not a UMAP hater in all settings, but I think it's misleading and potentially harmful for this specific problem.
