Kalani Sitake told Dave McCann he still has a voicemail from LaVell Edwards on his phone from his first year as head coach (2016) saying how proud he was of him and the direction the program was headed.

I was reminiscing and looking at an old scrapbook and I found this note to me from Coach Edwards. @BYUfootball

West Virginia’s Rich Rodriguez is one of the only current FBS coaches to have faced LaVell Edwards. He was Tulane’s interim head coach when the Green Wave beat BYU in the 1998 Liberty Bowl. After the game, LaVell invited Rich Rod out to Provo to talk football. Really cool story.

I got to play for the legend LaVell Edwards and then I got to be in the coaching profession just like he did. I get to come home and be the head coach and lead a team with a culture that LaVell gave me as a player and then going to a stadium that is named after him. It’s all emotional.
