Important thread. Stacking more wind power onto the grid will, paradoxically, make energy bills more expensive, not less. This is why we need more Nuclear power to get bills down.
Tom Calver@TomHCalver

At Wednesday lunchtime, wind turbines were spinning 24GW of energy, with another 10GW from solar. 11 weeks earlier, on a still January morning, wind and solar combined generated just 2GW. Prices jumped to £477/MWh. This is the problem with the grid Britain is building. 1/5

Hydrogen is the stupidest, most ridiculous, and most impossible energy alternative. It takes 5 to 10 times more energy than it returns. This has been known since 2004, yet hydrogen refuses to die. It is far from renewable because it contains no energy at all—energy must be forced into it like a battery—and you lose even more when converting it back to electricity. It has the worst energy return of any alternative: far more energy goes in than you ever get back. Consider the process: you first split hydrogen from natural gas or use far more energy to electrolyze it from water, then compress or liquefy it, build extremely expensive and short-lived steel containers and pipelines (since hydrogen embrittles them), and finally deliver it to virtually non-existent hydrogen vehicles. Fuel cell technology remains far from commercial. It is also highly explosive. Hydrogen requires 12 times less energy to ignite than gasoline vapor, so the smallest spark or heat source can turn it into a bomb.

And it's why the Green's anti-nuclear stance is tantamount to being in favour of coal plants.

We don't have the natural geography needed for large scale hydroelectric capacity. Traditional nuclear will take 20-30 years to come online. This is why the future is SMRs.

The UK shut down coal plants down faster than anyone and failed to replace it with an alternative. If we are serious about energy independence or an industrial base we need one of the following: 1. Nuclear 2. More coal plants 3. Hydroelectric Capacity
Lance Lachlan ✌🏻@lancelachlan

Britain’s electricity is expensive because our power prices are still tied to gas. Gas share of electricity: UK: ~35–40% Germany: ~12–15% Spain: ~15–20% France: ~6–7% When gas prices spike, UK electricity prices spike too. Countries with more nuclear and renewables aren’t exposed the same way. We built a system where the most expensive fuel sets the price.

Reform UK had to dramatically revisit their 2024 manifesto - which would have undoubtedly triggered an acute Sterling and Gilt crisis. The 2024 manifesto offered up by the Green Party would, with little doubt, receive an even worse market reaction - with a severe negative impact on the cost of living. Any sustained polling around this level by the Greens will make a manifesto revisit inevitable.
George Eaton@georgeeaton

Green surge was inevitable now the “wasted vote” argument no longer holds. Labour will need to offer positive reasons to think again rather than simply saying Greens couldn’t win an election.

The Greens winning in Gorton and Denton is a loss for progressives. It opens the door to a more sectarian, radical form of politics which will divide communities. Reform will now be going into the next election warning of a Green-Labour coalition (like the Tories did with the snap in 2015). This all plays into the hands of Reform.

The Labour movement is here in full force. We’ve spoken to over 10,000 voters. It’s clear it’s a two horse race between Labour and Reform. Zack Polanski has been overheard saying they don’t think they can win here.

My past year on Civic Future's PLP has been transformative. An exceptional programme: intellectually rigorous, morally serious, and unusually honest about what governing actually demands. Programmes like this matter if we want more capable people to enter politics and public leadership.
Civic Future@civic_future

Today we launch the Civic Future talent programmes to find exceptional people who can break Britain out of stagnation. Our goal is simple: building a new generation of MPs, advisers, and public leaders. Apply below.👇
