Today I learnt: For the Sci-Fi Horror film 'Event Horizon' Sam Neill requested that the Australian flag on his character's uniform remove the Union Flag from the corner & for it to be replacedwith the Aboriginal flag, the way he thought it should look in 2047.

@MarkoMatvikov Expecting sympathy from the majority of Australians who could only dream of having these types of opportunities and earning that kind of money won't go anywhere. Rightly or wrongly, I think Labor won't cop the blowback all the economists on here are saying they will.

A mate of mine makes mega bucks working for a US company in Australia. He moved back here to be closer to his family a few years ago - and while he can make it work flying overseas most weeks, it’s very far from ideal. His plan is to retire early - his job is high pressure, high risk, high reward, and he invests most of what he earns so he doesn’t have to work for more than another decade or so. He’s always been furious at the tax he pays here - which is more than most people’s gross income - but as living costs keep increasing and his local investment opportunities keep dwindling, he’s reached the end of his tether. He’s now likely to move to Singapore and fly back fortnightly to see his family here - maybe just for a while, maybe longer as it’ll just be too hard to justify coming back to Australia. At the end of his career, he’ll sell the many millions in equity he holds in the company he works for - but of course he won’t be a tax resident in Australia when he does that. He’s aware of the ins and outs of the rules - including how he has to navigate changes in tax residency - and while he’ll still have to pay a lot in Australia, he’ll still save even more by moving. Australia didn’t create his job. An Australian company doesn’t pay his salary. He spends most of his time working overseas. Him being a tax resident in Australia is all upside for Australia. But it’s just so demoralising for him to work that hard, be further from where he needs to be to make work easier and get taxed more each year on the bonuses he works his ass off to earn. So now Australia is likely to lose one of its highest taxpayers because the burden of being high performer is just too great in this country.

I think. And I could be premature on this. But I think the universe is doing its big one. The bad guys are all going down. Dying. Losing influence. Fading away. And in their place, the good guys are coming to global prominence. The men the universe is wrapping its arms around are not just extraordinary athletes, but people who operate with humility, character, discipline, and grace. It’s no wonder McGregor’s fight was such a disgraceful way to go out last night. Their time is over. There’s a course correction happening. And the new breed of men are the Erling Haalands, Jude Bellinghams, Anthony Joshuas and the Declan Rices. The guys who who aren’t here to worship ego and money but are here for a bigger purpose.

Haaland and Norway are certainly a breath of fresh air through a stale and murky room, and not only for the past month. Their Federation is the only one pushing back against the so-called, Orwellian ‘Peace Prize’, the only one seemingly interested in holding FIFA accountable to any of its human rights obligations, and to its own statutes. Whether it’s playing with joy and perspective, overachieving on the field, players being aware of injustice and donating their fees to the people of Palestine, and at least doing the very minimum in a lonely attempt to hold the game accountable off the field, Norway is leading.

The son of the man shot and killed by ICE: I am Ronaldo Salgado, the oldest son of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. I want to tell you about my dad. He was a hardworking family man. Let me tell you about my father's last day alive with as much detail as possible. My dad got dressed, grabbed his lunch and coffee, hugged and kissed my mom goodbye, slipped on his hat for the day, loaded his lunch, his work boots, his coffee in his work van. He patted our dog on his head goodbye and drove off to pick up his crew for work. He should've been picking up the last of his guys before heading to finish up construction on some houses. 5 minutes later, unbeknownst to all of us, my dad had been shot inside his van by ICE agents in unmarked cars.

My brother has Down syndrome. He is thirty four and he bags groceries at the same store he has worked at for sixteen years. He knows every regular by name. Last year a new manager transferred in and started cutting his hours. Said he was too slow. Said customers wanted efficiency. My brother came home confused and quiet. He kept asking what he did wrong. He did nothing wrong and telling him that did not fix the hurt in his face. Then something happened I still cannot talk about without crying.

How about it @andyburnham planning on wealth taxes on the rich or a short three year stay in Downing street? Gary Stevenson, "If we don't get wealth taxes now, I guarantee you, Andy Burnham will fail on the economy" "That means he will fail at the election, and that means it will be Nigel Farage and Reform UK" Krishnan Guru-Murthy, "Describe the wealth tax you want" Gary Stevenson, "It's a tax on wealth, not on income, of 2% on wealth above £10 million" "So if you're worth £11m, you'll pay 2% on that £1m, which is £20,000 a year" "If you're worth £20m, you'll pay 2% on that £10m, which is £200,000 a year" "It would only be paid by the rich" "The idea is that it will stop the trend we are in where the working class gets poorer, the middle class gets poorer, the gov goes bankrupt, and all of that wealth flows into the bank accounts of the richest people in the country" "We have a tax system that is good at taxing working people, it is not taxing the rich at all" "Unless we can find some way to stop living standards from falling, it's going to be Farage, it's going to be Reform UK"

Lots of people telling me The Odyssey is a terrible film on the basis of not having seen it… FWIW, I’ve now watched it twice, and it is by some way the best cinematic adaptation of a Greek myth I have ever seen. It honours Homer while simultaneously making something new of him
Tom Holland@holland_tom

@Casey88428138 Christopher Nolan’s fascination with time, homecomings, narrative complexity and the moral ambiguities of heroism make him the perfect director for The Odyssey
