In early Feb 1834, Lafayette reported pain and fatigue. He had pneumonia. At about 4:00 in the morning, May 20, 1834, Lafayette pressed to his lips a medallion with a picture of Adrienne, and he took his last breath. He was 77.

On March 17, 1790, Lafayette sent Washington one of the most powerful symbols of liberty: the key to Bastille. On July 14, 1789, the key arrived in America as Lafayette called it a tribute from “a missionary of liberty to its patriarch.” #MarquisdeLafayette

Happy Lafayette Day! On March 14th, Richmond (Virginia) celebrates 🇫🇷🇺🇸 friendship. Once again this year, alongside @GovernorVA and the @LafayetteFriend, I attended the ceremony honoring the values Lafayette stood for: freedom, equality, and human dignity. #LafayetteDay

Lafayette Descendants view the Brandywine sash. The sash was said to have bound a wound on his leg during the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777. Blood stains appear on the weave. On exhibit at the Fraunces Tavern Museum in NYC. #marquisdelafayette #brandywine

When Lafayette returned to France in February 1779, he didn’t walk into a hero’s welcome — he walked into house arrest. Lafayette secured 6,000 French soldiers under Rochambeau and five warships under Admiral de Grasse, setting the stage for victory. #marquisdelafayette
