In early Feb 1834, Lafayette reported pain and fatigue. He had pneumonia. At about 4:00 in the morning, May 20, 1834, Lafayette pressed to his lips a medallion with a picture of Adrienne, and he took his last breath. He was 77.

On March 17, 1790, Lafayette sent Washington one of the most powerful symbols of liberty: the key to Bastille. On July 14, 1789, the key arrived in America as Lafayette called it a tribute from “a missionary of liberty to its patriarch.” #MarquisdeLafayette
