There was a time @iiscbangalore used to be known locally as the Tata Institute. The Tata's always considered IISc special, and Ratan Tata was no exception.

Farewell to Ratan Tata. An icon of Indian industry, admired by people from all walks of life. His presence at the IISc court meetings was inspiring, and his speeches were listened to with rapt attention and admiration by IISc faculty members.

A good positive control has the power to say "it's not you, it's the experiment." It's no fun when an experiment fails, but it helps to know it's not because you did the experiment wrong but because science just doesn't work that way. And it frees you up to try other approaches.
