The Most Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally, the new Archbishop of Canterbury, has set off on an 87-mile pilgrimage today. Walking from St Paul's in London to Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, the pilgrimage is part of her spiritual preparation for her Installation service on 25 March. A short service was held at St Paul’s Cathedral, before the Archbishop, with her husband Eamonn and other pilgrims, walked across the Thames and began their exciting journey. Speaking from the steps of St Paul's, Archbishop Sarah said: 'Thank you so much for coming to be here today... Do join with me in praying over the next five to six days as I walk to Canterbury.... Do pray for me and I will continue to pray for you, that together we journey with God and into God, but most importantly with each other.' Read more on Anglican News: bit.ly/4rEQwKy @ArchbishopSarah

The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally became the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury today at a Confirmation of Election service held at St Paul’s Cathedral. Her first act as Archbishop was to take up the Primatial Cross and give the blessing at the end of the service. The service included words of affirmation from the Archbishop of York, who said: 'Sarah; be yourself. For it is you that God has called to be 106th Archbishop of Canterbury.' The Confirmation of Election enjoyed contributions from a diverse range of church and community groups from the Church of England and wider Anglican Communion. The Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, the Rt Revd Anthony Poggo has shared his Christmas message: My dear brothers and sisters, on behalf of everyone at the Anglican Communion Office, I send you warm greetings in Christ. It is a joy to serve the Anglican Communion. This year, I've had the privilege of visiting several of your communities around the globe. In many places, the church is thriving. I am deeply encouraged by your ministry, hospitality and faithful witness. You are fulfilling the purpose for which Jesus was born: to bring the good news of salvation to the world. At this time, many of you are serving in places of conflict or challenge. I think especially of our Christian family in places like South Sudan, Sudan, DRC, Myanmar, Israel and the Gaza strip, among others. I think of those in Hong Kong affected by fires, or those in Sri Lanka impacted by flooding. As you seek to support your communities, be assured of our ongoing prayers and solidarity. This year, Christians marked the 1700th anniversary of the first Council of Nicaea—the council that gave us the Nicene Creed. That Creed affirms the central beliefs we share across so many church traditions. It connects us—across cultures, centuries and continents—reminding us that Christ calls his Church to be one. In recent days, we've seen this call to unity powerfully embodied by Pope Leo XIV (from the Catholic Church) and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I (from the Orthodox Church). During an ecumenical pilgrimage in Turkey, they signed a joint declaration—reaffirming a commitment to work toward the unity of their churches. In doing so, they modelled the same spirit of reconciliation that guided the church fathers at Nicaea seventeen centuries ago. They also made a strong appeal for peace, urging global leaders to end the tragedy of war. At Christmas, their declaration challenges us to remember that Christian unity must always bear fruit in our witness to the world. The book of Isaiah tells us: "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." As we prepare for Christmas and celebrate the coming of the Prince of Peace, may we continue to walk closer together as Christians. May we share the hope of Christ with a hurting world. And may we work tirelessly for the peace that only He can bring. Amen. ‘We're just people in God's eyes - we're just ordinary and we’re all equal. So, if we have humility and an understanding and authentic mindset to connect with other people, that will be the greatest way to do reconciliation.’ Ahead of Reconciliation webinars this November, Agnes Lam spoke to the Anglican Communion Office about how to have a mindset for reconciliation. Agnes is an advocate for reconciliation and climate justice. She's a member of the Anglican Communion Youth Network and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) Faith for Earth Youth Council. ‘To be reconciled – to God through Jesus, to others, to the planet – is the most exciting thing a human being can hope for. Through reconciliation, we realise what it means to be created in God’s image.’ This November, the Anglican Communion Office will host a webinar about the Lambeth Call on Reconciliation. One contributor will be Alan Smith, a member of the Church Commissioners Board in the Church of England. In a recent interview, he discussed why reconciliation is a distinctive pillar of the Christian faith, drawing from his work exploring reparations for the Church of England's historical ties to the transatlantic slave trade.
