Good news Friday: After being dismantled and placed into storage more than a decade ago, the Grade II listed Torsion Fountain by Czech artist Franta Belsky (1921-2000) has finally returned to the South Bank! Created in 1959-63, the fifteen ton bronze sculpture was originally positioned in the courtyard of the Shell Centre on London’s South Bank. Cast from clay and plaster moulds in 104 sections, the fountain was driven by two four-horsepower pumps. When in full operation, 2,000 gallons could be driven through the channels and piping that vein its spiralling shell forms. Permission was granted by a Planning Inspector in 2014 for it to be removed while the site was redeveloped into luxury apartments, with a planning condition that it eventually be reinstalled. As the final phase of the Southbank Place development completes this month and the site hoardings come down, Torsion has re-emerged in its new position - slightly further to the north by the railway viaduct and hemmed-in between two residential blocks.

BREAKING NEWS: In a moving and poignant case study for modern heritage, the government has announced that the National Covid Memorial Wall in Lambeth will be permanently preserved, less than five years after its creation. To progress the conservation of the Wall, the government will now fund detailed feasibility studies to be undertaken by heritage experts as part of the COVID-19 Commemoration programme. Founded in March 2021, the @CovidMemorialUK stretches 500 metres along Albert Embankment opposite the Houses of Parliament, and includes approximately 250,000 hand-painted red hearts with each heart representing a person who died of COVID-19 as a direct cause of death. The structure upon which the memorial was created is a Grade II listed 19th century Portland stone wall, 7ft high and running for half a kilometre along the western boundary of St Thomas’s Hospital, facing the River Thames. The Wall is a unique memorial in Britain; established by the bereaved for the bereaved with the early support of activists @LedbyDonkey. Maintained by a group of volunteers, all of whom have experienced loss as a result of COVID-19, The Friends of the Wall became a registered charity in 2025 charity with the purpose of maintaining and preserving the memorial, regularly repainting hearts that have faded.

🚨 Islington Council sent bailiffs to evict a man with incurable cancer. He was turfed onto the streets with just the clothes on his back and his crutches. They then disposed of his belongings including medication. He told me he has to wash in McDonald’s toilets and sleep on night buses whilst having chemotherapy.

.@lambeth_council have said that they will not evict tenants in debt due to Heat Network charges. Yet nearly a 1/4 of their 3,500 HN homes are now threatened. Tell us how extended payment plans work for those whose benefits leave them in negative budgets?
