Interoperability between blockchains IS essential for the future of Web3. Let's use an analogy that anyone could understand. Imagine setting up an online-based company that needs to find a reliable provider of a server for hosting its business. The company can only select one server which is set up in one particular location of the world (e.g., only one blockchain). Your company chooses the server based on the fewest tradeoffs since not all servers can fulfil all their needs. (e.g., speed, cost, security, decentralised, historical uptime, coding language, users/liquidity etc) What if your server gets overloaded with other users? (e.g., congestion on a blockchain) Or if there is an increase in electricity prices in the geographical area of the server, making the operational cost of it expensive? (e.g., expensive gas fees) Perhaps there is a power outage in that area due to severe weather? (e.g., blockchain outages) What if a better, new chain emerges? (e.g., limited flexibility when hard coded to one L1) Conclusion: If we truly want adoption of blockchain, we need to give dApps the flexibility to move across chains in the event of something happening to their anchor chain. Secure interoperability and scaling, without creating a tradeoff in regard to decentralisation/security, will be essential. If not, the security requirements will likely not be met by high-volume, high-capacity applications. The operational risk simply becomes too high. Therefore, interoperability between blockchains IS essential for the future of Web3.
