OMG the Pepe here in the comments saying “Tipping isn’t mandatory” blah blah blah… No, it’s not mandatory however, we make $2.13 (here in the states anyway, and the entire system has always been built on the fact that we provide a service of waiting on you hand and foot with a smile and wildly known sentiment that the customer is always right when you and I both know that’s a load of shit. This service we provide is unlike any other service you pay for in life unless of course you’re paying a hooker. The point is so that you do not have to do a thing! You do not have to cook, you don’t have to make multiple meals for picky eaters, partners don’t have to eat cold food after taking care of their kiddos, you don’t have to refill drinks and you don’t have to clean, you don’t even have to get up. We, as servers, put up with a lot of shit and work hard to get that tip. From making sure your coffee stays hot, to making sure sure you have a perfectly cooked steak, to keeping your children happy even after they’ve thrown spaghetti at the walls, colored on the table, cried the entire meal, to making sure everything about your visit is 100% up to your expectations so that you don’t have to lift a finger. I agree that tipping has gotten out of control and that awkward stare of a barista that makes $15/hour is at the very least irritating, but contrary to what some might think, we aren’t paid enough to put up with assholes, gentle parented kids, snobby high maintenance Karen’s, and yes even sexual harassment. So, your tip pays our bills. We do this mostly because we love it. We are generally people’s people, we love the hustle and bustle, the change of pace and spontaneity. We love to talk and love new things. We love that restaurants work around our school schedules and kids soccer games or that we can trade shifts with another server or pick up a shift if we need extra cash. What I’m trying to say is that this is the system. It’s been this way since the beginning. It’s an industry with unwritten rules. The amount of money being made is directly related to how well we perform or how shiny our personality is (also much like hookers 😝). It’s just the way it is and taking it out on us makes you a dick! Perhaps don’t go out to eat if you can’t afford to tip or you hate the system we didn’t create.
