We've been battling the Darkness in NOCTURNE's playtesting trenches for five months. The game has undergone numerous revisions as we played with two playtest groups, each over 5-sessions in a self-contained story against a powerful Nocturne called Edgar Crowley. But the end is in sight. We're entering closed beta in a few weeks! This means core mechanics are locked and loaded. Callings (our take on classes) and Abilities are still getting some fine-tuning, but this character sheet is damn close to what you'll see at release. Lifepath System: From Normal to Nocturne In NOCTURNE, you weren't always a hunter of shadows. You had a life, a job, maybe even a cat. Then, the supernatural ripped it all away. This encounter shattered your reality, forcing you to abandon your old life and answer a higher calling. Now, you're a weapon against the Darkness, a warrior against its insidious corruption. But the fight takes its toll. You'll face Dread (our way of handling stress), making D20 Stat Checks even more treacherous. It increases your Critical Failure range. And beware of the temptations of the Darkness. Give in to cruelty, and you'll gain Inner Darkness. While the Darkness offers gifts, they're always wrapped in curses, twisting you from within. Hold onto your humanity. If you accumulate 10 Inner Darkness, you're lost. You become one of the Nocturne, a puppet dancing to the Darkness's dirge of woe.
