@LauraErlanson The word "colors" slides into that bit of the melody in a way "voices" wouldn't quite.

For years I've had this problem that "The Colors of the Wind" is such a gorgeous tune I keep wanting to sing it, but the lyrics are so unbearably cringe I think I would die before I got through the whole thing. Is it just me? Can anyone relate?

@BMcGrewvy Have felt this way since it came out when I was in high school. And besides the overall cringe, I always thought it would make more sense to "paint with all the colors of the MOUNTAIN" and "sing with all the voices of the WIND." Mountains = colorful, Wind = noisy

Seeing this cover for a Spanish version of Abolition of Man raises a very important question: Does “men without chests” translate into “men with giraffe heads”?

Timeline cleanse: Bragging on my cousin, who's just set a new record in his county for the most different species of birds observed in a single calendar year (226). A few of his photos.

@AndrewTWalker Adams: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

The Constitution didn’t create the disorder now unraveling our civilization, and it will not—on its own—repair it. The health of any political order depends on the moral commitments that exist before laws and charters are written. America’s pre-liberal foundations rested on Christian truth. Without a return to that moral framework, grounded in creation order and natural law, our arguments over constitutional design and interpretation are little more than surface-level maintenance on a collapsing structure. No legal document will protect a polity that lacks virtue and shuns moral order. At its best, a constitution should be a barometer of peoplehood, not its arbiter. Peoplehood reduced to legal procedure means the "res publica" is fraying.

When Harvard law professors start getting commemorative stamps for reshaping American politics—as Buckley did—then perhaps their self-congratulatory posts will merit respect. Until then, stay athwart, friends.

Now that Charles Murray is becoming a Christian all I want for Christmas is for Douglas Murray to do the same thing.

Joy is when your son shows up unexpectedly at the front door, after a five-hour drive, to surprise his mom for her birthday. And brings her a gift. And buys everyone's lunch (what!?). And goes to a movie with you. It's not the presents, but the presence. @The_5th_George

Remember when people thought “24” was unrealistic because “there’s no way all those things could happen in just one day”? Meanwhile, that’s just a random Wednesday in 2025.

@jaynordlinger Agreed! I think it every year as well. I also think that despite the ubiquity of Andy Williams' "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," Johnny Mandel's arrangement is somehow underappreciated. It's a banger.

I say it, or think it, every year: “Sleigh Ride” is a minor masterpiece. (I’m listening to it in a diner right now.) Take a bow, perpetually, Leroy Anderson.

@pastor_adam Yes, but entitlements can eat waste for breakfast. That's what they really, really don't want to talk about. No one is opposed to cutting waste.
