@clairevo We bounced from and back to private for our elementary kids. High scoring local public schools because kids did test prep worksheets all day (even more if you didn’t need extra support). My kids are creative weirdos, and one would have struggled in MS. Both thrive in private.

I have experienced private, parochial, and public for my kids. 90% overlap on academics. Public is 10x more resourced. Parochial best sports. Private wins on PX (parental experience.) Great teachers in all, meh teachers in all. Know what you’re paying for if you go private! It (in my limited experience) is not differentiated academic outcomes.
Nick Maggiulli@dollarsanddata

Private schools are the most expensive placebo in America. Nowhere else will you pay $250k+ for something that has so little impact on school achievement. My latest on why private school isn't worth the cost: ofdollarsanddata.com/why-private-sc…

@sonjaphoto @sciencegirl We were a Kings Quest family. I tell my kids how we had a pad of graph paper next to the computer, and my dad, brother and I would map where we went. I’ll still occasionally scroll through a play through on YouTube.

@sciencegirl This was 80’s to early 90’s, anyone remember the Quest games? Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest - my family loved them! I had my boys play as children so they could grow up with the same games.

@maiab Even signs of older kids means even if no peers right now, it's a conducive neighborhood. Bikes dropped in front of houses is a good one, 'Drive Slow, Kids Playing' signs. Halloween decorations up. It has bought me HOURS AND HOURS of kid playtime. Can not understate the value.

@maiab Neighborhood design is a big one. Kids unlikely to walk/bike down busy street. Culdesac where you can see circle from your windows is top choice. We live in dead-end neighborhood with limited traffic. Drive around potential 'hoods at 4pm (when not raining) and look for signs.

@maiab Maia, I talked about exactly these feels as a guest on this podcast: youtube.com/shorts/bLNw2BV…. I hope next time you’ll give the other person the gift of letting them help you. She clearly wanted to! It’s so hard to say yes, and such a good practice to be in.

I went and got myself a coffee this morning and then walked over to the playground. My baby immediately knocked over my coffee and spilled it all on the ground. So like that sucked. A woman was walking past and she was like, "Oh my god, did your coffee just spill?" And she said, "I'm gonna go get you a coffee. What did you have?” So that was really sweet, but like, I don't know, I didn't know how long I would be in that spot, and I also feel like I have too much money for anyone to ever buy anything for me so I was like, "No, I'm fine." She was like, "I'm sure I'll do it for you and I said, no don't worry about it, I'm fine," and just shooed her away. And I really regret that. Like, I think 1) I would have loved the coffee, and 2) she was so eager to help and accepting her help I think would've made everybody feel better, made our community feel stronger. I was sort of trapped at the playground and not in a position to go get myself a new coffee so I could've given her my credit card and had her buy it, but she was still doing me a big favor by going to get it for me. But like, it seems kind of weird to give a stranger my credit card, but like, probably not a stranger that just offered to go buy me a coffee. I should've done that, I just couldn't think fast enough to make that happen 😕

@AshleyGWinter I was put on it at 15 (1998) for painful periods. At 24, they finally sent me for a bone density scan and promptly pulled me off. So many crazy side effects, and terrible option for a young woman.

@Rick_Pescatore 11pm at ER with sudden onset of 2 herniated cervical disks as an otherwise healthy early 30s woman. Worst pain of my life (incl childbirth). Doctor came to waiting room, discharged me with Xanax and told me to go home and sleep. When I returned, it was an emergency page to neuro.

It's easy to dismiss pain when it's not your own. It's easy to label, to turn away. It’s harder to stay human. But that's the real work. And it's the only work that matters.

@SpiritedSparr0w My house had tile counter tops when I bought it. Haven't gotten around to replacing them yet, but yes, they suck. Much harder to clean and work on. Prone to cracks and chips. I do not recommend.

Please no. Don’t ever do this. We have tile countertop and I can’t wait to replace it and sledgehammer it. Nothing sits on it even. You cannot use a cutting board without it wiggling. Grout is impossible to clean. Cannot knead dough on it. Just don’t ever do this. You want a smooth surface where you prepare food. I am correct here.

@robprogressive If you are withdrawing large mounts of cash, they are supposed to ask if you are being told to withdraw the money by someone, or coerced, or if there’s anyone outside waiting for you. Standard practice to make sure vulnerable people are not being scammed.

My friend tried to withdraw £20k from Natwest bank & their response was shocking For 30 years my friend has been a loyal customer He called to withdraw the money & they said no He went into the branch and asked face to face to withdraw the £20k and they asked 'what it’s for' He said ’none of your business, it’s my money’ They said ‘unless you can tell us exactly what the money is for, you cannot withdraw it' This should shock & terrify you. Your own money isn’t even yours anymore

@kirbywinfield I don’t think I’ve been fully out of pocket for more than 24 hours in 9 years. I check my email, and at least one basic metric that shows my business is functioning as expected, every single day. Without fail. Even after I stopped being CEO.

a founder should be responsive to select people and situations over the holidays. which means they need to, like, check their email. this is entirely uncontroversial to anyone who works at or invests in startups.

@devahaz @AmandaMGoetz My 4th and 1st graders are at a top-scoring Washington state public school, and both just missed 5 days for family vacation. Teachers gave full blessing with no assigned work. My 4th has 1 small packet of homework/week and my 1st has none. It doesn’t have to be that way!

@AmandaMGoetz I get their response is dumb, but isn’t this just how school has always been? I was a public school kid and if you wanted to skip school and not get penalized you had to get an excused absence. I’m not saying all these policies are great, but this sounds pretty standard to me.

My daughter missed school on Friday so we could make memories together. Because I didn't lie to the school and say she was sick, she has to take a 0 on a test that brought her grade down. I was told "next time just say she is sick" I don't understand what's happening. When did we decide that values and family time are not acceptable.
