94% of Americans don’t know that San Francisco is not the biggest city in the Bay Area

@MissJilianne Seems fair to me US taxpayers pay for the parks, seems ok to me for foreign visitors to pay more to visit them

I think it’s disgusting the United States charges $100 per person visiting our country to enter a National Park. Embarrassing too!

@devahaz iirc half were tofu with sweet garlic glaze & half were creamy jalapeno artichoke. For $13! a few weeks after this we paid $10 at Red Lobster for a basket of extremely mid mozzarella cheese sticks and questioned every decision that led to that.

@PorcellianView @dealflow_guy Areas where the rich people live in Dallas are generally red, very different than Austin overall, and even different than Houston which is vibes wise sorta between the two

@Charlesaf3 @moseskagan @rohindhar Yep, wine has always mostly been an older person hobby around here
Deva Hazarika@devahaz

@rohindhar Makes sense. Alcohol trends aside, wine used to be something Bay Area people got into over the years as they got rich. Now people getting rich enough to buy expensive houses long before the age people usually tended to start getting into wine.

@moseskagan @rohindhar counter - for those of us who like wine, a useful cellar is a good thing. I've Never thought it moved the needle on value though. I built it for my own use. Back in the day I could see it moving the needle on value in San Francisco. Now I bet everybody wants a pot humidor

Would say the demand for anything “wine-related” in a home (wine cooler, wine storage room, etc) Has dropped to near zero in San Francisco right now

Maybe. But I sure wouldn’t be celebrating anything when the budget is frozen while he begs for money from the state. Plus, let’s just look at the optics of spending $30M to open a city run grocery store (that a private company could have built for $3M) and THEN begging the state for more money

@_robyn_smith Sushi hon lunch omakase, this pic from a recent Yelp review. Dinner is like 20 courses for I don’t remember $135 or $155, also a great deal relative to other comparable places.

@devahaz my wife and I go to either Taco Bell or Michelin-grade restaurants, sit-down chains just aren't worth it anymore. this pile of delicious food was $43 (pre-tax/tip) from a Vietnamese restaurant in the Michelin guide.

@xwanyex That thread is a perfect epitome of discourse on here, 1000 idiotic replies positive they know exactly what’s going on, while the informed detailed answer is just sitting right there

This is extremely old news, and they have their dates incorrect. This initiative seems to recirculate every 8 months when the news cycle is slow. We announced this initiative around 2020. Hundreds if not thousands of locations have already had their lobby drink stations removed, and it’s not a big deal. We announced this about 15 years prior to the target date. All new McDonald’s built in the last 3 years have this “new” setup. All remodels have had the option for the same setup over the past 4 years. No rationale was given. This isn’t a cost move, as it will cost me $30k to make the change (and I still offer free refills). I can speculate that with digital orders now making up a much bigger part of our business (+30%), it’s much easier to have the fountain behind the counter to fulfill digital and delivery orders. They announced this change around 2020, and it’s been a pull, not a push. I feel they are simply preparing their setup for what they think our business will need in 2036. At first I was very apprehensive when it was originally announced (and reported on 5 years ago), but now it completely makes sense with customer flow. We handle hundreds of delivery orders a day. Having to fill drinks in the lobby or interrupt the drive-thru “robot” is neither fast nor efficient.

@devahaz I only think so because they make the mid tier restaurants - local places, small chains, etc. - way less appealing, the food feels like slop and half the time they all serve the same thing.
