If you earn $60,000 and have an average-sized HECS debt, this year you will pay back $1,500 of your HECS… but your debt will increase by $1,700. That’s not fair, and it’s why I’ve joined other independents in urging the Federal Government to consider other options.

HECS rant 1/2: I know I’m not the only one in this boat but I’m struggling to understand the logic of the HECS indexation being applied before tax time. I’m lucky to be at the very end of my HECS, and my compulsory repayments this year have now covered my debt (woo hoo).

Thankfully a very uneventful night in Port Hedland, with wind gusts recorded at the airport less than 70km/h. Not sure what it was right on the coast. Really feeling for those in the hit zone. #tcilsa #cycloneilsa is still at cat3 strength closing in on Telfer.

Once when touring Geraldton’s prison as a Journo, I asked the guard about the aircon sitch. He replied “what do you think this is? A hotel?”
