My institution is planning to “reposition” the college of humanities & sciences, lumping multiple departments together into cost-saving umbrella units to allegedly “foster cross-disciplinary curriculum & collaborations,” while cutting staff & resources. I knew this day would come

@DrBrookeNewman We’re going through the exact same transition at my institution!!! What is this weird trend??! It’s so destructive. I spent 20 years building a program and they’re going to destroy it with neglect and minimizing. It’s a hard time to be retiring…. 😥🥺

Afghan women earned the right to vote in 1919, a year before women in the U.S. could. Behind me is Queen Soraya of Afghanistan, who led the charge for women’s suffrage. We come from fierce, powerful women. This is the Afghanistan I want the world to know. It’s what we fight for.

Me in Kabul, at Bost Restaurant. It was woman-owned (@MaryAkrami), with 100% female staff. This was a few months before the Taliban takeover. Behind me are images of legendary Afghan women. We smiled then - excited about the future. Afghan women were unstoppable. Still are.

Boston's 1920 Women Voter Register is full of immigration stories. With the transcription of the Ward 5 registers, the #MaryElizaProject has found a new story: a tale of two immigrants: Rose Délima Grégoire and her husband, Donato Orlando Racioppi.boston.gov/news/ties-bind

With a name like Zaidee Jackson, I had a hunch this new voter had an interesting story. And boy does she! From Augusta, GA, to Boston, MA, before traveling the world as a jazz singer! Read more about this voter's fascinating story here:
City of Boston Archives@archivesboston

Jackson's occupation is listed as "housewife," and in 1920, perhaps that's how Jackson would have described herself. However, by 1924, Jackson was making a name for herself as an actress and jazz singer

On Oct 13, 1920, Zaidee Jackson of 50 Munroe St walked to a @BostonElections voter registration booth and claimed her right to vote. Born to sharecroppers in Augusta, GA, Jackson was one of many Black Americans that moved to Boston during the Great Migration. @universalhub

I found 45 women, including two @SimmonsUniv professors, living in the same apartment and registering to vote in the fall of 1920. Read more about Fenway apartment hotel history, women's suffrage in my newest blog:
City of Boston Archives@archivesboston

In the 1920s, many of Boston's professional urban women tried out a new housing option - the apartment hotel. Read about The Fenmore, a Fenway apartment hotel, and the new women voters the #MaryElizaProject found living there! boston.gov/news/fenmore-p… @universalhub @HUBhistory
