Our journalist @kieran_andrieu is in Israeli detention, having been illegally captured alongside 462 other people while trying to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Here's what we know so far:
- A lawyer from @AdalahEnglish met with him at Ashdod port yesterday, after waiting nine hours to be allowed in. She was present during his hearing and reports that he signed documents agreeing to immediate deportation. We don't know much else, but he didn't make any particular reports of violence.
- 'No particular reports of violence' probably means he reported similar to the 331 other people Adalah were able to speak to at the port between 15:00 Thur and 05.30 Friday: systematic rights violations and abuse, including being forced to kneel for five hours with hands zip-tied together, and being denied water, sleep and toilet access.
- We believe everyone, aside from four Italian politicians, was transferred to Ketziot prison this morning, and so Kieran is now there.
- We don't know much at all about what is going on inside. The British consulate may have visited some people today, but this is unconfirmed. They have not visited Kieran, and it has been indicated that they may have been denied permission to do so.
- Kieran is generally considered to be at higher risk of mistreatment in prison because he is British-Palestinian. The best thing we can do here, we think, is make it very clear that we are all watching to see how they treat him.
- We are consistently being told that UK nationals will probably be deported in a group on Sunday or Monday. Aside from Kieran, we believe there are 12 others. We'll be there to meet him if this happens.
