@PrisBlossom Completely just on my own with them. Me, them, dogs. No real sense of community and no family support (as in, no family relationships or rejected by family, not a physical distance).

If you were going to be alone with your kids throughout the holiday season, what would you do to help them feel especially loved and cared for? I'm most worried about the day of the holidays themselves. What special things might you incorporate?

@ChristinaHagi Trying to do this actually! Just mustered the courage to ask someone else if she'd help me plan. It wouldn't be the "day of" but hoping something comes together in the weeks leading to or right after.

@Shei_laVie They’re 10 and 13. Normally we’d have my wife around and have some traditions as a little unit. Without her, I feel like I need to make sure they’re feeling especially loved and connected.

@joycefr We've done that a lot in the past, so we'll likely find ways to contribute in that way again this year. I guess I'm looking for something I don't really know how to describe. Something that's different than what we'd typically do and will make them feel especially loved.

@LaurenRowello Does your community have any charitable activities over the holidays that your family could be involved with -- for example, serving meals at or delivering toys to a homeless shelter? Helping others might take their minds off their own situation.

Honestly, I think what's tough is that I just want them to feel some of the love that family or community offers, and we just don't really have those people in our lives right now. So maybe that's just something we have to figure out how to cope with.

Also: I appreciate the "quality time" types of responses, but I'm looking for tangible ideas. We're especially alone this year, and my kids don't have the sense of community or ritual they need. We have a solstice tradition we'll continue, but I'm looking for other things to do.

@Hippiechick68 10 and 13. The younger is always down for anything. The older is harder to please. It's just me and them--not even my wife--for the first time, so I'm feeling like I need to make sure they're feeling especially cared for.
