Rocky was brought to life in 3 different ways for ‘PROJECT HAIL MARY’:
• Puppetry - a 17th century Japanese method named Bunraku was used where a collective of puppeteers operating it at once
• Animatronic - Used for scenes where puppeteers couldn't follow. The animatronic would receive movement instructions a different Rocky operated offset
• CGI - Used for more complicated shots that the puppeteers couldn’t fully perform

I read that during filming his two daughters said Rocky's lines into Ryan's earpiece so his response was truly warmth and sometimes unexpected. That's brilliant from his director!
