This year marks the halfway point for UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. New report released by @IEA, @IRENA, @UNStats, @WBG_Energy & @WHO shows that basic energy to all continues to falter due to the pandemic & ongoing energy crisis.⚡🌐 Read👉bit.ly/3qvGzVS

The easiest way to decarbonize blue-water shipping well prove to be biogas. Ammonia is inefficient and a bastard to handle. Methanol requires carbon, for which biogas will be the cheapest source, so why not just use that. And gas engines are boringly easy. hydrogeninsight.com/transport/maer…

Major news from Europe! The Net Zero Industry Act #NZIA was published today - the EU's response to the US Inflation Reduction Act. Let's look at what it means for #CCS and #CarbonRemoval. A longer overview ↓ The big news: an annual 50Mt injection capacity in strategic CO2 storage sites in the EU by 2030. That's for the EU only (not EEA which would also cover Norway, for example). This is a major milestone for #CCS policy in the EU. A few numbers for background. At the 2022 EU CCUS Forum, stakeholders estimated the demand for annual storage services in the EEA (including Norway, Iceland) to grow from 80 million tonnes of CO2 in 2030 to at least 300 million tonnes of CO2 in 2040. The 50Mt target will help to develop CO2 capture and storage as an economically viable climate solution reducing emissions, but also for technological carbon removal methods that rely on geological storage like #DACCS and #BECCS. The target is especially important in light of the lack of storage sites which is currently a major bottleneck in Europe for expanding CCS deployment. Member States must publicly share data on areas where CO2 storage sites can be permitted. MS are also required to annually report (1) CO2 capture projects, estimating the corresponding need for CO2 injection and storage capacities, (2) storage projects in progress, and (3) national support measures to help with the first two areas. Article 18 outlines a completely new policy tool in the EU, "Contribution of authorised oil and gas producers", basically a type of carbon takeback obligation. Such entities are subject to an individual contribution to the EU-wide 50Mt target, calculated pro-rata based on each entity’s share in the EU's crude oil and natural gas production. And there is a lot more in the proposal: • improving investment certainty, policy focus and coordination through the setting of clear objectives and monitoring mechanisms; • lowering the administrative burden for developing net-zero manufacturing projects including by streamlining administrative requirements and facilitating permitting, setting up regulatory sandboxes and ensuring access to information; • facilitating access to markets by specific measures related to public demand through public procurement procedures and auctions, as well as through schemes to support private demand by consumers; • supporting innovation, including through regulatory sandboxes; enhancing skills for net-zero technologies and thereby promoting quality job creation; • coordinating net-zero industrial partnerships. Press release, factsheet and more: ec.europa.eu/commission/pre… Legislative proposal: single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu/publications/n…
