The left sees the world as a zero-sum game. As they are not able to create anything, they focus on stealing other people’s money. Free market supporters focus on growth, which drives prosperity for all. That’s the difference.

Una vez me encontré a un ingeniero en electrónica que le mostré un circuito que yo habia diseñado y me dice:
no uses diferentes valores de resistencias, diseña tu circuito que use todas iguales asi ahorras dinero.

Let's look at a counterfactual. What if government spending on R&D is completely slashed? Will corporate R&D follow different and perhaps more efficient path dependencies in raising overall productivity?
Soviet Union spend a lot of R&D and much of it didn't translate into productivity.
Maybe there is "tech search space" in abstraction that's better perused by markets forces than public R&D?

In Brazil, investments into research doubled the productivity of agriculture in that country, a 17 fold return on investment. The case for public R&D is incredibly strong -- let's look at on great example. 1/

The backlash I’ve seen against this paper in the last few days is, frankly, strange.
Some economists and social scientists seem disgruntled because the paper does not establish causality from structural adjustment programmes (SAPs) to economic devastation across the Global South.
The paper does not claim to do this, nor is it pitched as a research article. It reviews evidence.
Perhaps the most striking weakness of the criticism this paper has received is the criticism's failure to grapple with the many studies the paper *does* cite that support the claim that SAPs contributed to economic decline in many countries around the world.
Even the World Bank and the IMF have openly admitted that SAPs in the 1980s and 1990s caused harm in developing countries.
What this backlash reveals, above all, is an enduring unwillingness to reckon with — and properly study — the historical record of harm caused by the Washington Consensus across the Global South.
