@LeadElimination
LEEP is an international NGO working to reduce lead poisoning and improve the health, wellbeing and potential of children worldwide.

For our 🔸10% Pledge our family has donated to Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEEP): 1. Children in poor countries lose 6 IQ points on average due to lead exposure, per one estimate. 2. Despite that the problem got just $7-10m in charitable giving a year, until a recent push. 3. @LeadElimination has a strong record of actually changing policy – one estimate is $1.66 to prevent one kid being exposed to leaded paint through childhood. 4. For instance they helped pass enforceable lead paint laws in Nigeria and Liberia, have commitments from 9 more countries, and took Malawi from 67% leaded paint sold 3 years ago to near eliminated now. 5. Lead does more than damage kids brains and stunt their potential. A 2023 Lancet study estimated 5.5m adults die early each year from lead-related cardiovascular disease - 6x higher than previous estimates. 6. Adding up all the harms the total economic toll of lead exposure is plausibly enormous - ~$6T/year or ~7% of global GDP. My interview with their co-founder @LuciaCoulter on the 80,000 Hours Podcast from a few years back is below. Learn more about the 🔸10% Pledge here if you like: givingwhatwecan.org/pledge (Note: I'm not sure whether or not LEEP has a big funding gap right now - we actually made this donation last year and I forgot to post about it at the time.) If you want to give to something similar other than LEEP then consider these funds or the orgs they're making grants to, links below: • Lead Exposure Action Fund • @GiveWell All Grants Fund (which gives to more speculative GiveWell-researched grants) • Charity Entrepreneurship Incubated Charities Fund (LEEP was incubated and given seed funding by @Charity_Ep)
