Ahead of Veterans Day, I was honored to welcome a flight of veterans and their families as they arrived in DC. To all those who bravely served our country, thank you to you and your family for your extraordinary service. The sacrifices that all of you have made to protect our country will be honored, today and every day.

September 11, 2001, is a day forever etched in our memories—many of us remember exactly where we were that morning. More than twenty years later, we honor those lost by teaching our students about the tragedy, the unity it inspired, and the lasting impact it had on our nation. #NeverForget #PatriotDay

We’ll never forget the lives we lost on September 11, 2001. Let’s continue to honor their memories, and the courage of our first responders who put themselves in harm’s way.

In today’s episode of What Are They Thinking: “If you don’t see a hurricane coming… does it really exist?” 🚨 The Department of Defense is shutting down its weather satellite program. No more data. No more updates. Meteorologists are scrambling—and we’re heading into peak storm season. Brilliant timing.

It shouldn't get lost that just today, Senate Republicans have voted to close nursing homes, close rural hospitals, and cut food stamp benefits for children and veterans.

Today, we mark the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. On that cold Sunday morning, 600 brave souls began their march from Selma to Montgomery. They were met with crushing violence, beaten by troopers with nightsticks and trampled by horses. And still, they returned to Selma and marched on, crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge determined to push our nation toward a future that was more equal, more just, and more free. 60 years later, we honor the legacy of those 600 brave souls, and we march on. This work is not easy, and we cannot do it alone. Together, we recommit to our fight to safeguard the freedom to vote. Together, we must stand for democracy. Together, we must continue our fight for justice, equality, and opportunity for all.

So many Black North Carolinians have made all our lives better, and we are forever indebted to them for their efforts. During Black History Month, we celebrate their sacrifices and take inspiration from their contributions so that we too can make the lives of others better.

When I was a teacher, my students and I always took time this month to honor the generations of Black Americans who fought against injustice to achieve equal rights. May we all reflect on our past as we continue working to build a society that lives up to its democratic ideals.
