@BioLayne Also, doesn’t cane sugar (sucrose) need an extra enzyme to convert to glucose and fructose whereas HFCS is just glucose and fructose as monosaccharides?

“Our bodies can’t digest high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), it doesn’t have the proper enzymes to break it down” The level of stupidity is unreal. 😑 If we couldn’t break down HFCS that means we couldn’t absorb the calories, therefore we would lose weight eating HFCS. I don’t want to live on this planet anymore 😫
Decoding Fox News@DecodingFoxNews

Fox News invited Diana Atieh a self described MAHA mom and influencer to talk about Coca-Cola's decision to add a cane sugar version of their product to the U.S. market. Atieh has a degree in media studies. She's not a nutritionist or a medical professional. This makes no sense.

An incredible feat...making a personalized, clinical-grade CRISPR gene therapy in 6 months that is actually efficacious! As @UrnovFyodor put it, this "is a triumph for the American peoples’ investment in biomedical research" nytimes.com/2025/05/15/hea…

My brother's niece was just diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of brain cancer. Her parents will be living at the hospital with her for the next few months while she gets treatment. A family member set up a GoFundMe to ask for help with expenses. <3 gofund.me/b2f61e1a

@normonics @jeremykauffman Why? It’s a protein, and thus readily denatured and broken down in our acidic guts? It’s much less likely to make it though digestion than other natural insecticides like nicotine or caffeine

@jeremykauffman Unlikely. More likely their harm is very obvious and fatal in insects at these doses and our bodies have to deal with them but aren't immediately incapacitated at said dose. Very very unlikely to be biologically inert.

@jeremykauffman @normonics You also probably eat it if you eat organically produced foods as the bacteria it comes from is used as a pesticide as the whole organism for the same purpose.

@normonics Yes, there are obviously substances that are harmful to some species but not others Bacillus thuringiensis appears to be one of them

@normonics @jeremykauffman BT is an insecticide, not an herbicide (it kills insects that ingest it, not plants). And it’s a protein that is highly specific to the gut of insects where it is activated by the alkaline environment.

@jeremykauffman What do you think the BT protein does? What is its biological purpose?

Do you know how BT crops work? That's not listed on the box Herbicide resistance gets more of the headlines but BT protein production is more integral to the growth of the organism, can't be washed off One example of what is reasonably referred to as "poison" (it is) not being listed on the box.
Jeremy Kauffman 🦔🌲🌕@jeremykauffman

I keep hearing this line about "hidden poison". Is the contention that the ingredients listed on the side of every box are false or missing? What's being hidden?

Delighted to share that I’m opening a lab at Seattle’s Institute for Systems Biology @isbsci in January 2022! We will study gene expression in bacterial systems with microbial single-cell transcriptomics. We are looking for a research assistant and a postdoc!

Today is my last day at Just-Evotec Biologics. I am so proud of the Antibody-GAN work and our badass AI generated antibody discovery library. I will truly miss my team at @Evotec. But I am also VERY excited to join a stellar ML team at @novonordisk! More protein ML here we come!!

@BioLayne It's also wrong. Autophagy is not renewal, it's degradation (and is often upregulated in some types of cancers). Also, there are multiple cell types that live the entire (or close) to lifespan of the organism (eg. neurons, oocytes).

Our immune systems do a good job of making antibodies, but these don't always make for great drugs. We're using GANs to create humanoid antibodies, designed the way our bodies would make them, but optimized for therapeutic purposes. A new platform for faster, better drugs.
