Society loves an “overnight” success story, the rapid rise of an unknown artist sliding straight into an auction house, going viral or platinum seemingly out of nowhere. Artists on a slow + steady incline don’t get written about as much. Maintaining growth (especially through a tough market period) + long term relevance is incredibly difficult but much less exciting to celebrate. As an artist, a slow + sustainable build is what I aspire to. I want to experiment, explore + make mistakes. I want it to be messy. I want to grow new shoots from ashes. I want to know that when I arrive at each destination, I have a journey behind me + another still ahead. As a small collector, that’s the kind of artist I look to support too (though I admit my motivation for collecting is almost entirely support-based, I rarely collect for investment). If you’re an artist feeling defeated by anything you see around you, take a step back to consider your own version of success. Retreat back to the original reason you started making art + let that steer your next move rather than the crushing weight of fomo-induced injustice. Take a break from your triggers. Focus + flow state. It’s not easy, but it works 🖤
