My transition out of academia is an opportune time to take stock of what I've learned from 17 years of research on disasters & climate impacts. Top of mind: in our decentralized land-use system, its going to take more than good information to make better development decisions. 🧵

Once towns let homes be built, they have a legal obligation to maintain access and keep rebuilding the roads. Local officials should think twice before they commit their town to maintaining a future underwater road -- forever.

The US is an oligarchy where 3 billionaires hoard more wealth than half the nation & working class people aren’t guaranteed healthcare or a living wage, yet Biden & the Democrats are on TV pontificating about bringing “democracy” to the world when we don’t have democracy at home.

I’m so honored to be a part of the 2022 #Grist50 fixers team. Working with @betterbuyout to provide holistic relocation assistance to families affected by increasing climate impacts is hard work I’m deeply proud of. We still have so much work to do. #climatemigration

10. Perhaps this sounds politically realistic. But given the choice, I think a lot of governments would pick this kind of migration over chaotic displacement.

9. At the moment adoption funding is mostly spent trying to help people stay put. This is important and should continue. But some *extra* adoption money earmarked for helping people move could be transformative

8. It could mean carefully planned relocation projects that enable communities to move before they are forcibly displaced by the impacts of climate change.

7. Through this lens, climate adaption starts to mean all kinds of different things: It might mean creating housing and services in cities that people are likely to move to. 🏡🚉🏥🏙️ It could mean investing to create meaningful work for new arrivals. 👩‍💼👩‍🏭👷‍♀️

6. Migration is often dangerous, difficult and risky for many. 🛑⚠️ But this is actually a reason for investing in it. My argument here is that adaptation funding should be invested in making migration safer.

5. So migration is also creating a flow of cash directly to families in some of the most climate vulnerable places. Again, why not use some adaptation funding to amplify and facilitate this existing trend?

4. Migration actually helps build resilience for people who stay behind too. Most people who move send money back to their families. 💵➡️👩‍👩‍👧‍👦 This creates financial stability in the face of livelihoods being eroded by climate change

3. There are limits to what can be done with resilience building and in situ adaptation. Pessimistic, maybe. But realistic. Some people will need and want to move. Why not direct some adaptation funding towards helping them do that safely?
