Metagames.Errata No politics; just positives. 💚 3.5e-ish DM. Errata for your whole table. If I didn't follow you back, you probably didn't talk enough TTRPG.

@JJShurte So in a game designed for character customizability and tactical positioning, it punishes PCs the most when they're built for multiple attacks and commit the grave sin of repositioning themselves on the battlefield. Haven't worked it out yet, but I'm thinking of altering that.

@JJShurte Skill points and feat trees are a feature, not a bug, yes. As is the walking thing. One attack is a standard action and the full-attack takes a full-round action. You can take a 5 foot step for free, but once you move than that, you don't get a full-round anymore.

@LeityMatthew talk to me of 3.5, what are the most common complaints about it compared to earlier editions?

@JJShurte Not better, no. In 3.x, spell saves are based on spell level. In 5e they're based on proficiency. So either way, your wis1/ftr19 is a lvl 1 wiz. But 5e players expect a lvl 6 wizard's Save DCs to go up. Well I'm going to agree, but I'm a 3.x fan. And I like Nickelback.

@LeityMatthew How does magic scaling with class level make more sense than spell level? Would a Wizard 1/Fighter 19 be better at casting than a Wizard 10? Tieflings are the Nickelback of D&D Races... All d20's seems like a solid system for me.

@JJShurte (deep breath) magic scaling with spell level rather than PC lvl, cantips and orisons limited per day (some of these just come from the 5e crowd), and everything the grogs have dunked on since the 2000s: ascending AC, "universal d20 is bland," ... tieflings, and superheroism.

@JJShurte Bloat, power creep, "build culture," too much math (temp bonus stacking, impossible-to-trivial DC curve giving odd vibes, skill points being a headache), feat tree headaches, unoptimized PCs being outshined by others or overwhelmed by enemies, attks per round crippled by walking,

@baryontensor I was at work and needed my eyes somewhere else, so I had Gemini read it. It was going to sound like AI as far as I could tell, either way. lol

@LeityMatthew The points themselves sound reasonable to me, but that AI-generated prose is so grating to the ear that I had to stop reading after the first subsection.

I agree with ... every point you make. But this is the problem with these types of debates. You can say that players and DMs alike burn out of the system itself, but you're either talking to non-5e players who agree or you're talking to 5e players who haven't burnt out.

@dragontimeDM Dude, awesome! No, all my mail this week has been bills. And a home warranty scam in my wife's name, not even mine.

Mail call! Who else got happy mail this week? Oddly enough, these came from a guy who lived relatively close and we were able to meet in person for an exchange.

... One of the last things I said was that everything he "prefers 5e because" of is handled either the same way or with more meaning for depth-of-character or PC decision-making in 3.x. There's nothing except that he doesn't have to read as much. (I'm not sure that's even true.)

It's why I was hoping to have a long-form point/counterpoint with my 5e DM about the realistic capabilities of either system. I figured he's far from an idiot. If anyone can defend this dumpster fire, it ought to be him. But even that debate petered out ...

@JJShurte That's fair; noble, even. I just don't see it as social media bs when, near as I can tell, the last setting guide that wasn't watered down from an earlier one was in 2005. Or earlier. I don't know whether the '04 Dark Sun was worth anything either. I just can't get with the hype.

@LeityMatthew Yeah, you’ll get no argument from me about that. I just want to avoid this social media thing where everyone starts collectively shitting on it before it’s even out. I’ll wait and make up my own mind, and the worst case is that I just go back to the old stuff.

Call me crazy, but I’ll wait & see what this new Dark Sun turns out like in person. I want it to be good, but don’t have high hopes… but also I refuse to ride this circlejerky rage-baiting bandwagon. The collective opinion of “the community” doesn’t matter. My table is mine.

@koneshnobIX @isee_a_darkness ... "Though psychodrama players might create any type of character, they generally favor PCs who exhibit dark moods and extreme behavior. A character description featuring a traumatic pivotal event that shapes the character’s actions is a sure sign of a dramatist." It goes on.

@koneshnobIX @isee_a_darkness I'll argue. Because if they only joined 10 years ago, why is this in my DMG 2 from 2005? Separate from players who focus on "story," mind you: Psychodramatist Players can be drawn to D&D’s roleplaying aspect without especially caring about taking part in a wider story. ...

it’s so funny people like this act like DND hasn’t always been for theatre kid types
