@Tomi_Tapio That information is actually potentially incomplete. There are references elsewhere to "The Stolen Bacillus" (printed in English) from 1903 and 「天来魔」from 1897. Hence the need for independent sourcing to make sure one isn't inadvertently repeating potential gaps and errors.

Most of my day today was spent tracking down and attempting to verify the existence of a bunch of translations into Japanese of proto-SF writing from the Meiji period, all so I can write two sentences with two supporting endnotes. Fun times.

@Tomi_Tapio Those I already knew about and are already quite well documented. It's a bunch of more obscure Wells short fiction translations that predate his wider availability I needed to locate.

Surprisingly, while Jules Verne gets practically everything he's written translated into Japanese within the first decades of the Meiji period, aside from a few pieces of short fiction, it doesn't look like H.G. Wells gets much attention until much later, around the 1910s.

@LeityMatthew The points themselves sound reasonable to me, but that AI-generated prose is so grating to the ear that I had to stop reading after the first subsection.

I agree with ... every point you make. But this is the problem with these types of debates. You can say that players and DMs alike burn out of the system itself, but you're either talking to non-5e players who agree or you're talking to 5e players who haven't burnt out.

@HistorianZhang @DrFrancisYoung For literature, the usual structure is the big theory and politics excursus in the intro, followed by four fairly traditional close readings, concluded with a call to revolution.

This is something one of my grad students has been exploring, and I certainly hope to see more come out of her work.

Anyway, I think there's potentially interesting work to be done on this topic of global anime before it was recognized as "anime" in places other than the US (e.g., India, Southeast Asia, etc.), but I wonder how much of the archive for this is even still extant or available.

I've been trying to find a copy of this obscure local English dub of Macross that partially aired in the 1980s in the Philippines, before the American Robotech dub was released there.

@FakeTsudonym @gonglei89 @diana_liwen I've booked hotels around Nippori/Ueno precisely so I can take the Skyliner if the only flight I can get lands at Narita instead of Haneda. It's easy enough to get around Tokyo if you don't have luggage so it really doesn't matter too much to me where in the city I end up.

My goal is avoid taking the Yamanote with luggage and taking the NeX accomplishes this. Stops at Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo so I can last-mile taxi or subway from any of those. I didn’t like maglev+line2 because you get deposited outside instead of an internal connection and then have to go through China train TSA again

Walked around some old haunts today and I’m now ready to call it. If Shanghai were representative of a whole country that country would not only be first world but at the front of the pack (haven’t been to Shenzhen yet but I’m sure SZ would give SH a run calm down SZ truthers).

@sayingboourns It wasn't even in the original short story, which was a quieter, more meditative piece addressed to the future daughter, so it really felt like a superfluous tacked on plot point.

@sayingboourns I generally like the film for the most part, but that climactic sequence where China was threatening to use military force on the aliens unless Americans could convince them to exercise restraint was a seriously weird bit of projection.

@cszabla Won't happen because it's the bosses and managers who seem to adore these "tools" the most, but I sometimes think that these mishaps should really be treated like fire-able offenses, especially in government or academia.
