When I got my first real job in Lagos, I called my mum and said, “Mama, things don dey better small.”
Two days later, my uncle’s number started ringing. Then my cousin’s. Then my aunt from the village I hadn’t spoken to since 2022.
“Your mum said you don dey work now.”
“Your younger brother needs school fees.”
“My daughter dey sick, we need 15k for drugs.”
I sent the money—all of it. 145k gone in one week. I ate garri and groundnuts for the rest of the month to save for rent.
The next month, I set a boundary. I told them I could only send 20k.
The calls got fewer. My mum said “I hear you” in that tone meaning I had disappointed the whole family.

He didn’t tag me. He didn’t have to. Everyone knew.
