Votes cast in the @FamilyLawBar elections 😀 Wonderful to see so many new young colleagues keen to get involved! And if @BarristerWilson's work on the wellbeing committee is anything to go by she will make an amazing treasurer 😊

While this announcement will be cautiously welcomed by many, the families of those who lost their lives to Covid, it remains to be seen what the scope of the inquiry will cover. The next steps will be to appoint a Chair and agree the Terms of Reference, the document that 2/3

@pjm1kbw @Chevilang I agree. Nobody should have a direct line to the PM in order to negotiate personal tax issues. Irrespective of whether there was any legal wrong-doing such privileges circumvent established rules of transparency and erode trust in the government.

@Chevilang It’s surely highly inappropriate for any prime minister to give personal assurances directly to anyone about their personal or corporate tax affairs. That’s not party political. It goes to the core of standards and conduct in public office. Who else does he deal with in this way?

Certainly not against greater transparency, and tighter lobbying rules, but is the supposed James Dyson scandal an example of wrongdoing, and if so, how and why? Or is it just being pounced on for party political gains by Labour on the back of other genuine examples of cronyism?

While this is a legitimate criticism, the importance of the development and uptake of the doctrine of universal jurisdiction is undeniable as it is another (and increasingly deployed) weapon in the fight against state impunity. #humanrights #justice #internationallaw 2/2

Universal jurisdiction has its flaws. Some have commented, for example, that national courts which do not implement the required nuance and specificity of international crimes in their domestic laws risk undermining the distinction between these and non-international crimes. 1/2

Very pleased to read that the President of the Family Division, Sir Andrew McFarlane, intends to review how best to embark on a gradual return to in-court hearings, whilst retaining the best of the many undoubted advantages of remote hearings. lexisnexis.co.uk/blog/family-la…
