Let’s go Finland 🇫🇮 I would love to see a country with the population of a Costco parking lot calmly dismantle ’Merica at hockey. No chants, no chest-thumping, no delusions of grandeur, just discipline and players raised by saunas & good public education. #WorldJuniors

Friends! We finally found it!
A rare wheelchair-accessible home with ramps, a yard, and an accessible bathroom. Pretty much move in ready. We just need a bit more to cover the down payment & moving costs. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. 💙 You guys have always been so supportive but if there's anyway you can help, now would be the time as we don't have much time to make this happen.

@Marla_jsmith I’ve realized that my home is unvisitable. The truth is we will all experience some form of disability as we age. This is something I will be keeping in mind for our next home.

@merlemassie Love this. Have you read Phone Booth at the Edge of the World?

My latest project on my farm walking trails is a ‘Telephone of the Wind’, known as a wind phone. Last night, the bench arrived so I took the evening to assemble and place it. Now, those who would like to use the phone can relax and take their time. #WindPhone #MassiePanoramicFarm

@Smil3yAngel @zweistein54 Coward picks the most easily con riding in Canada. Obviously can’t take a real challenge.

@zweistein54 I know. They won by 82%, but it'd still be funny if he lost 🤣

@KimFCoates I’ve lived in 6 different provinces and one territory. The CBC was my constant and the reminder that it’s all one country. We need a common voice.

One final thing. When it's time to add a verbal cue, choose a word Bowie has no negative experience with prior. It's incredibly common for humans to get frustrated with a dog and call them with a harsh tone. It takes much longer to condition a positive emotional response if they already have had any negative association with it. I use hustle because it's not something they'd ever hear me say otherwise so their first exposure to the word is 100% great and then we reinforce that.

Admin post:
Discussion time.
There's an awful lot of people that would never hire me to help them train their dog because they assume a person in a wheelchair is incapable.
But if a trainer can only teach something as simple as a down by pulling the dogs head to the floor with a leash, forcing it down by the shoulders, or having to lure it into position with a cookie, then they aren't the most capable. Without ever laying a hand on the dog (except for pets, scratches and affection) or luring their nose to the ground, I'll teach the basic positions AND have the dog develop it's problem solving and critical thinking skills along the way which in turn builds their confidence.
Why do you think most people automatically assume the able bodied person is the better trainer?

@servicerotties Thank you so much Marla! This is an amazing response to my question and I will start working with Bowie in the way you suggest. I'll keep you posted.

Not currently, but I highly recommend getting a dog whistle. Introduce it indoors by getting the highest value reward your dog can have. Forget the dog treats. This is the time for skin off the chicken or leftover steak. Have the dog sit across the room from you and when it looks at you simultaneously drop the food and blow the whistle. Do this for several repetitions so the dog associates the food with sound. Then switch to dropping the food immediately after the whistle. The goal is to condition the dog so that the sound means there's something amazing coming. Increase the distance, practice it from other rooms, in the yard. When the dog can actively be sniffing outdoors and can come running every time they hear it, it's time to move on to phase 2 which is the verbal cue. If they don't automatically come running give a second blow on the whistle, but no more. If they haven't recalled, go get them and put a leash on. It just means it hasn't been conditioned enough and they need more practice in a less stimulating environment. Young dogs get in a week or 2. Older dogs it's often 4 weeks before it's 100% consistent both inside and in an enclosed outdoor space. Even after that, it takes regular practice to keep that conditioned response. I'll still randomly blow the whistle and drop something super high value as my dog comes running. That whistle is the emergency recall that will call her from a long distance off of anything because it's been conditioned so thoroughly. It's not just about the food, but the dopamine release that comes with it.
Once you've got a solid recall to the whistle, put a verbal cue in front of it. Here, whistle, drop high value reward. Practice it inside at first, then increase the distance and distraction. Eventually that word predicts the whistle and the reward. After a few weeks you can use the word without the whistle, still using dropped high value rewards. Once that's really solid you can start changing the reward, sometimes it's a high value reward from your hand, sometimes it's a few liver treats on the ground, sometimes it's just kibble. This creates an effect similar to slot machine payouts on a human. Sometimes you get a little, but sometimes you get a huge payout. Eventually you can use that word where sometimes there is no payouts but because often there is and sometimes it's a jackpot, that word has loads of value and you get a very solid recall. It takes a few months to really get there but a little practice every day is worth it. Sometimes you'll pull out the whistle and give the really big payout just to keep it well conditioned. That way if your dog suddenly takes off after something that is worth more than the possibility of a jackpot, you have something that means a guaranteed payout that all they have to do is show up for. It takes time but what were doing is making it so the dog isn't stopping to think about whether it's worth coming when you call them, we're making it a conditioned emotional response, much like how when a person hears their text notification they automatically reach for their phone.
